Remember when I said I wanted to snazz up the player icon a bit?

I am become Death, Destroyer of Fish.

Basically the same scene, but with a new character base icon and four items equipped (hood, robes, fishing pole, and fishing spear.)

The new base icon occupies a 20x20 pixel square. It juts out 2 pixels to either side and 4 pixels above the "top" of the 16x16 square. My original plan would be that this would be a PC-and-very-special-NPCs-only thing, with the idea being that they'd be "larger than life" (and also that this would serve as a handy way to identify other PCs wandering around the map).

Five minutes after looking at the 16x16 NPCs in my testbed town map and I knew that wouldn't work. Those extra two pixels in every direction just makes so much difference in terms of the level of... I don't want to say "detail" here, but it certainly makes them less vague.

So the main thing that's going to distinguish PCs is their equipment, which will be more varied and frequent and have a greater tendency to bust right out of the bounding box.

"Hand" items have a default offset that would put a spot near the lower corner overlapping the hand they go in, with the idea being that you would want to hold a weapon with the pointy end out away from your body. Some items, like the fishing spear, modify that a little bit.

(Regular spears also give you a bonus to fishing, but the fishing spear gives you a better one. It's also worse for fighting.)

I also timed the screenshot so the badger's heart emblem isn't lost in the mountains. Every PC gets a pet (which is summonable and dismissable practically at will), so you get a heart over yours to make it identifiable.

I actually have a lot more done on the combat/dungeon crawling side of the game... I basically have a credible dungeon crawler with the framework for the other stuff attached. But right now the dungeons are kind of boring looking (plain black floors, one wall icon, one kind of door), as opposed to this scenic spot.

Edit to add:

The problems of the badger icon bothered me enough to get me to straighten them out. Here's a slight redo of the scene, with the new and much improved badger:

Gettin' fancy there, Lexylady :).
