I've made some changes that will hopefully help to usher a new life in this guild. In the past week or so, I've seen several tumbleweeds pass by and little activity apart from a few comments made every time I made a post.

Although it's always nice to know that at least somebody reads these posts, it would be even nicer if the forum would actually live, and I'm hoping that it'll eventually be as much used as the Developer Forum is today.

In order to do this - and in order to cut back on yet even more Anime games that have been submitted, I have come up with a solution: let's disable the submission of games to this guild!

All game submission are now to take place on this forum where submissions can be discussed, and hopefully approved. It kills two birds with one stone: not only does it get rid of the random Anime submissions, but it also advertises your game a little more and allows you or others to look up why your game was approved or rejected on this guild.

I hope that the desired effect will be reached and that the forum will spring back into life if people are forced to use the Submissions board. Also, we can finally rest from the Anime submissions because frankly I don't think "they" can even reach the Submission forum without thinking twice about which guild to submit their creation to.

The second item on the list is the change in ranks. The ranks were really weird, with everyone having a default rank of "Dungeon Master" and "Commanders" being in charge. (Aren't Dungeon Masters above Commanders? Apparently not.)

The ranks have been changed to the following (special thanks to Foomer for coming up with most of the names):
  • Lords of the Realm were called Commanders before but are now called a Lord of the Realm and control the entire BYOND RPG guild, helping to make policies and submission guidelines and make posts like these for the benefit of RPGs.
  • Dungeon Masters were previously called Game Masters and assist the Lords That Be by enforcing policies and giving helpful advice. They have a lot of power in the guild.
  • Special Rank: Serjeant Painter. It has the same privileges as Dungeon Masters but the rank is assigned to Foomer for his contributions in lay-out and the original rank specification. Thank you Foomer!
  • Currently unused: those with the rank of Groom of the Stool have the honor of adding games to the hub and managing game submissions.
  • Guards are moderators of the forum. Currently nobody is a guard. Hopefully that will change when the guild becomes more popular.
  • Adventurers is the new default rank. You may freely submit blog posts (although you can't submit games to the guild). Note that you don't need to be a BYOND Member to post on the forums, so anyone may submit their games to this guild and talk about RPG games.
  • Peasants don't do very much. If you did something bad, you might become one yourself, and be unable to submit blog posts or review games. Best not make the Dungeon Masters angry!

I hope that everyone understands the new ranks and why the change in structure was made. I hope that the new guideline will help to defer Anime to Anime and bring new life to the guild.

The last item on the list is the poll. It's been there for quite some time now, and not making a new one isn't going to help this guild to become more active.

The result of the last poll, "Which era and theme do you like the most?" is unfortunately for myself "Fantasy", with maybe a bit of Medieval on the side.

Personally, I like science fiction games the most, because they border closely to reality and allow even the most stubborn minds (like mine) to experience the world in full detail. But to each his own, I guess.

But enough about that old poll, let's bring in the new: What kind of experience system do you like?

The choices are as follows:
  • Level-based is the most basic. You start hitting the pbag a million times or kill a bunch of players, and through killing you gain experience. Once you have reached a limit, you "level up" giving you a random boost in stats and making you a little stronger.
  • Skill-based gives you more choice. Instead of leveling up only one value, depending on what you're doing in the game you can level up specific skills. Some players will be higher in skill than another making an unique combination of traits. Occasionally games use the collective value of all skills to generate a level--in this case it's still a skill-based system.
  • Free-form systems are complex to work with. A free-form system allows you to pick traits which come in the form of advantages and disadvantages. Advantages cause you to lose points while disadvantages give you points. In most cases the excess points that you have are turned into skill points and a cash-in based approach is then used. This system allows the most control, but is the most difficult to set up and understand because of all the different traits and skills, and the relations between them.
  • Cash-In systems work by allowing you to gain points instead of levels after you've gained enough experience. Afterwards you can use the points to increase skills, "cashing in" on your work.

I don't plan on having this poll open forever, so cast your vote today!

I apologize for the wall of text and the lack of images. Have a very safe day.
Cash-in is probably the most robust and customizable. There's also the option to refund their points so they can rebuild their character without starting all over.
most modern level-based systems employ a heavy dose of cash-in (level up -> get skill/stat points to spend); your description of "level-based" is simply hit pbag 1 million times -> get random stats, which is pretty biased and unusual (in real RPGs)
I'm loving this. Keep it up, Android Data!
By the way. No experience system. Zelda ftw!
I favor level-based experience because I'm old-school like that. It's simple to understand, even if it does lack realism. I don't mind other systems but this one has endured for good reason.

Incidentally it's not uncommon for level and cash-in systems to be combined. Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords uses this kind of system, where the "price" of each upgrade varies by your chosen class.
I've always been very fond of bumping up my various attributes whether they be in a tree or just stats. It almost makes me feel like I'm creating something special and above all, it's really easy to do and understand. :)

If you combined this with module based levels or quests where you have to come back from an adventure before you get to spend your rewards on preparing for the next great adventure, I would prefer that.

Great Job , Data
I prefer Cash-in or Skill Styled based leveling systems.
I Find that (pbagging) isn't all to fun clicking a button hundred-or-so times to level up random stats that mean nothing in the time it took you to click.

I like getting points to spend on stats whenever my characters level up.
I'm not completely sure that forcing people to use the forum is a viable route. While it might work to some degree, but it would seem more beneficial to offer content and options that raise the desire to post.

As for the new ranks, In like them, but I see a logic inconsistency. Groom of the Stool and Guard both hold a position of trust, so it seems rather strange to have two separate ranks.

Last, but not least for the skill system. I'd have to disagree with Lummox JR. While experience based systems are old, I'd dare say that skill-based systems can rival them (at least around the good old 'pen and paper'). Actually, they feel the most natural to me, given that you get better at what you do, instead of learning how to heal through slaughtering masses of enemies.

What I see as the best answer is simply people like us stepping up and making threads about stuff.
I have no qualms with skill-based levels, but I think those systems can spiral out of control very easily and are harder to balance. Some skills are inherently worth more than others which makes some relatively useless. The old level system is imperfect but it satisfies the KISS principle.
If you want Game Submissions to happen on the forum, you're probably going to have to post about them yourself since most game submissions take place from the hub entry, not from the guild. People aren't going to care at all about the guild's rules on such things.

Rather, if someone submits a game, make a post on the submission forum for it, then get your feedback on it. Doesn't seem like a bad idea to me, especially for games that you're not familiar with.

That way, there's no unbalance. Just Skill.

I like skill-based and level-based. Though I favor skill-based over level-based. I like being able to level up specific skills rather then kill a bunch of people to get levels. Just way too boring for me.
can't vote on this... i like all the forms of a RPG sept Free-form equaly, in the manner of i like each one for diffrent use's (sept free-form, i don't like those very much, not often i play a free-form game)
They are all excellent systems and can be used interchangeably if you know what you're doing. I for one prefer the Level-Based system myself. Call my nostalgic, but I enjoy the simplicity it owns and the way different levels of power are categorized so neatly. It should be without question that a level 16 Character would be much stronger than a level 8 Character. I must say, though, that mixing Skill based and Level based makes for a very interesting and successful combination, based off of successes from past games that have used it. I think it is one of the more underused progression types on BYOND today.
