Resident Evil Online 2: The BYOND Classic Sequel

Alright, here's a review for one of the greatest... no, the greatest BYOND Action game. This is one of those games that prove if you work hard on a game, players will come.

Gameplay

The quality of play experience is almost always great. Although a lot of chatting is always going on, you can usually receive any help through the guide or the chat. The game does not use BYOND 4.0's Skin Interface. I'm not for sure, but I think it's so people with 3.5 can still play it. Now basically what you do in the game is get yourself equipped with some handguns, machine guns, and explosives and just run through hoards of zombies trying to survive. (Well I run through hoards of them =P) Some people stay back and defend a base from the zombies, and try to hold them off as long as they can, and some just rush in to get kills and money, but whatever your reason, you won't get scolded for not cooperating with a team. You shoot holding the F button, and it's auto-aim so it targets the closest zombie to you. You can use explosives such as grenades and detonatable C4s to kill an area of zombies to put a big gap in their front lines. There are many types of zombies, and bosses as well. Once you die, you become a zombie. You can die by infection which is received when a zombie bites you, and by dieing from too much damage to your health. But when you're a zombie, you switch sides and get to kill your formal allies by infecting and killing them. The maps never get old as Darker Emerald has a map maker in which he has players doing his work for him and making tons of maps to be placed in updates that are sure to come. The gameplay is sorta repetitive as all you are doing is killing zombies, but it is a great game to pass by the time.

Presentation

The icons aren't horrible, but they aren't the best detailed icons you've ever seen. So the graphics part of the presentation got a 3. It has quite a few multi-tiled things in it such as explosions, cars, and the spider boss, but as said before, they are good enough to not hurt your eyes, but not great enough to make them shine. Even though REO2 doesn't have the best graphics, it probably has the best sound effects. This game goes all out with sounds. From zombie moans, to action packed music, to explosions and gunshots, Emerald went for it all. The sound portion of the presentation got a 5, thus getting an 8 in an overall statement.

Originality

Well, the game is based off a movie series, but it puts it's own style into the gameplay. You don't see any other team-based, zombie fighting games except for REO, which is made by the same person. The game has no ripped icons, and the programming is all original.

Overall

Overall, it's a game that should not be missed. At least try it if you haven't. It's addicting, fun, and original. A great BYOND game that is worthy of it's status. Try Resident Evil Online 2, it's way better than most of the games on BYOND. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for something to do. I play it usually in the mornings before school to just pass time, so try it today!

BYOND Action Games Bi-Monthly Cleanup #2, Postponed

First off, I apologize for my absence but I am very busy with my life and had no time for BYOND in the past month. Now that I am back I will continue my clean-up process and activity in the forums.This is suppose to be my second clean up, although as of now there are no endangered games!

If you are just hearing about this "Bi-Monthly Cleanup", and wish to learn more about it, read this previous post explaining the process.

There are currently 4 general submission requirements games must follow to join BYOND Action. If you want to see the new and pending submission requirements for BYOND Action, please visit the dedicated forum topic stating the official guidelines .

As I stated before, there are no endangered games for the current guidelines. Last cleanup I stated that I would like to use the NEW guidelines for this cleanup although the guidelines might need a little bit more work or just some over-looking. Fortunately, I have a plan on how to get all this work done.

I'm going to delay the cleanup for 1 month from today (November 1st) and that cleanup will use the new and improved guidelines! Therefore we can remove unnecessary games or get owners to spice up their games to meet the new requirements.

Decadence Beta

Decadence, a premiere 2D action game, will begin closed beta testing in the following weeks. I'm looking for a solid group of individuals who are usually online in the evening. You must be able to write detailed bug reports, provide constructive criticism, and have access to high speed internet. Programming experience is a plus.

You have until Monday to leave a comment detailing when you're usually online in order to secure a spot on the beta list. You may subscribe to keep up-to-date on beta details. This will be the last opportunity for anyone to sign up.

First, thanks for reading the Action Game Development Journal. This is a development journal I wish to start on helping others create and come up with new original shoot-em-up games.

Step 1: Getting The Idea

Ok, so you want to make an action game? Problem is... you don't have an idea!

Developing ideas for a game takes a lot of time and patience. Don't get frustrated! A great way to start out is doing what a lot of writers do.

Free Writing.

Free writing (also stream-of-consciousness writing) is a writing technique in which a person writes continuously for a set period of time without regard to spelling, grammar, or topic. It produces raw, often unusable material, but helps writers overcome blocks of apathy and self-criticism. - Wikipedia

So, sit down with a piece of paper and a pencil. Choose a couple of starting topics: War, Armies, Destruction... These are just examples, try coming up with your own base topics.

Now that we have our base topics, the three i'm using above. We can start free writing!

For three minutes non-stop write what ever comes to your head about those three topics. Don't worry if it's spelled wrong, unoriginal, or plain dumb. Write, write, write!

Go!

Ok, if you have done those steps you are ready to continue. Look at what you wrote. Chances are it's not a Steven King novel or anything. Just a bunch of sloppy words.

Weeding Out the Bads:
Look over your sloppy paper and re-read to yourself what you wrote. Read over it a couple of times.

Maybe theres a couple that just don't sound like they would do good. There might even be one that you think is really great, original, and creative.

Mark out the ones you think just don't work. Now look at what you have left. Try linking those ideas together.

When I tried this I got:
Grenades
Island
Guns
Explosives
Death
Enemies

Not a too-shabby list, right? Those ideas alone aren't too good at all. Let's try linking them together:

Two Armies fighting to the Death over an Island. Using Guns, Grenades, and other Explosives.

Whalla, you have a base idea! Try doing this over a couple of times until you get several ideas. Then try putting those ideas together.

And you have it! Your base game! Now you can start basing ideas off of your main idea.

BYOND Action Games Bi-Monthly Cleanup Proposal

Well, since there was a "BYOND Action Game List Cleanup" a couple months ago. I think this "Cleanup" idea should be done on a bimonthly basis(every two months).

I have prepared a list which I will try my best to keep accurate and personally check up on every week to make sure it remains correct and efficient. For more information on the list you can simply visit:

Now, each process of clean up will take two months to complete. The three steps are the list and warning statement, the warning period and than the clean up.

It starts of with the first of every second month, the list will be brought up to everyone's attention. If you find your game on the list, it will be your responsibility to try and fix why your game is not fitting the guidelines, if fixing the problem is impossible you than can ask for your game to be removed instead.

As well to the list being brought up every second month, this will also be when the warning period begins. I believe this period of time should consist of 4 maybe 5 weeks. After the 4-5 weeks, if your game still does not fit the Guidelines, it should than be removed from the BYOND Action Guild.

The second last week, just in case anyone didn't know about the cleanup or that their game was stated on the list. There will be another blog post to help make sure everyone is aware. After that week, any games that still don't fit the guidelines will be removed.

Now, just so everyone understands completely, I have written up the step-by-step example of how the process will work starting next month.

Example July 1st: Blog post stating that the warning period has begun, and showing off the list.
July 21st: blog post stating that it is the last week of warning period.
July 29th: Cleaning process begins and ends. All games that didn't fix what the guidelines desired, are removed from the Guild.
All of August:Update list weekly/bi-weekly as usual.
September 1st~: Repeat...

Now, I'd very much like to take full responsibility to this, I would of preferred to ask a higher member of staff to go through with this although I couldn't really get in touch with neither due to lack of contact methods. So leave a comment if you're in favor or do not like the idea.

BYOND Action Game List Cleanup: Final Week!

Two weeks have passed since the original post warning of new submission guidelines. That leaves one more week for hub owners to meet the guidelines or their games will be removed.

Just to reiterate, the new guidelines are:

All games must now either be downloadable, have a dedicated 24/7 host, or have an accurate hosting schedule posted on their hub to be listed

If you are the hub owner of one of the aforementioned games, be aware that you have one more week to meet the above guidelines or it will be removed from BYOND Action. If you don't think you can make this deadline, don't worry; you can always resubmit your game later on.

*Edit* It should also be noted that you do not need to post here if you make the required changes. I will be going through all of the hubs again in a week and checking. Feel free to do so if you want confirmation, however.
