The Sound Effects Solution?
I went to Best Buy the other day looking for voice recorders. The affordable ones didn't have USB output and the ones with USB output weren't affordable. But a simple eBay search of "usb voice recorder" provides many tantalizing options that apparently do a lot more than just sound recording!
If you've been wondering about an inexpensive way to capture sound effects "in the wild," this looks very promising. I'll let you know how mine turns out when I get it.
NOTE: Tempted? Of course you are! But before you buy, be sure to look at 1) where it's shipping from (if it's coming from, e.g., Hong Kong to the US there might be a little bit of a wait), and 2) what shipping charges are involved (some can be a bit excessive).

Ah! This sounds pretty exciting! I've been kind of idly looking for ways to capture some cool samples from "the outside" for use in songs and that seems to be right up my alley.
That, and the sound effects and music guild that I'm in the process of cooking up could use some actual sounds to get it kicked off, so maybe if yours works out I'll look into something similar :]
On an unrelated note, this background is really wigging my eyes out!
