"Level design" in an open-world game

A short but interesting (at least to me) post about some of the considerations involved in building an open-world game, and the problems of designing missions that could potentially be approached from any angle with any amount of firepower.

I made a weird comic strip!

Here's the link if you want to make your own! (I recommend IrfanView as a good free program for screen captures and cropping.)

Still the best Superman video game?

The (relatively) new Superman Returns game seems to have a lot going for it. Some critics have said it may be the best Superman video game yet, others have said it's not that great, and still others hold both opinions simultaneously.

A lot of the critics offering up these opinions are young whippersnappers who never even played the very first Superman video game. It was a pretty radical change of pace in its day -- it was one of the first "free roam" games ever sold, even if there wasn't a whole lot to see. Read about it here:

(via Crispy) Now I have to see which platforms Deus Ex is available for

Lummox JR says this blog post should have been submitted to BYONDscape. Crispy replies he thought about it. And Gughunter swipes a link to the blog post for the BYONDscape World Service. Net result: you win!

[Update: According to Metacritic.com, Deus Ex was released for both PS2 and Xbox, although -- surprise, surprise -- it isn't on the Xbox 360 backward compatibility list.]
