So i've decided that i'd go ahead and try to throw out an idea to unite BYOND developers in one project. I already have a vague design, that I am in love with, though that would litterally take a huge team to make.

But really I just want BYOND to get together and to make a game to show off BYOND! To get this site out there. And there is no better way than making a giant MMORPG really. When people join the game they will want to see how it was made and to see if they can make their own games. And I really think this will decline in all the RIPS littering this site. I will work on it no matter what, but the more people to join me the better this will work out(Inspired by John Lennon hah). Okay well wrote all this over couple days worth of planning and from ~4 - 9:am. I'ma go to sleep then re-read this and comment with a straight head hahaha.

P.S. I know this is long, and changes subjects; but base with me please, this is about the community actually working together not just some small game i've made.

Since i've got this new badass design of a computer meant to play Battlefield 3 and Skyrim; I can now push BYOND to it's limits without horrificly lagging on games like Decadence/SS13.I've lost all my progress on a design that couldn't have worked on my old computer so I want to create it now.

The design is based on the game; Earth and Beyond, EVE, Star Wars Battlefront 2 etc.(All focusing on the space aspect of the game). I want to create completely realistic(in sci-fi terms) a space ship. While operating this ship you have an outside, zoomed out view, of space, planets, stars and the other ships. Therefore you can move it aroundwith feux-realistic movement, being pixel-based. Though unmounting from your position you "Zoom-in" back into the inside of your space ship at a human perspective. This would allow you to see realistic damage. For ex: You hit a meteorite and a hole rips open a part of your ship so you dismount it and go inside your ship to fix it.You'd be able to create and destroy all objects just like SS13, so you'd have the ability to customize your ship and eve sabotoge other ones(Ex: Cutting the electricity, or the braking thrusters which could result in a crash).

Since you'd have a very vast mechanics to work with; there would be single-piloted fighter/scout ships, gigantic carrier ones or even space stations the size of planets. I understand the lag that would coincide with all this going on so I think the "galaxy" would be split into sectors and entering different ones would log you into the server specified for that sector. If servers get too laggy there could be a system of emergency alerts that require players to move to the less inhabited ones.

This type of MMORPG would be perfect for BYOND's advantages and disadvantages and use them in it's favor. And I believe if this project were to be made it could bring in a huge client-base that i'd say BYOND needs. After ~4-1/2 years of working solely bymyself on this, then having my work all wiped, i've realized that I could never finish my dream on my own. So that's why i'm posting here in Design Philosophy to see what the community thinks of it. And most of all if anyone agrees with this design, or even would like to help(I will post my information at the end). I won't give up on this. So please; post, comment, critize and contribute!

I'm thinking of having a very futuristic 'Elder Scrolls'('Morrowind', 'Oblivion', 'Skyrim' etc.)+'GTA'('III, San Andreas, IV') type of AI community. Because obviously the game won't automaticly be run by player who all join at once. Every original job will be filled by AI whose Productive() actions will be to run the job in the standard way. While All of the NPC's Also will have a modular operation they run by, sleeping, interacting, doing things players would do etc. But their difference will be in their Productive() and Personality() fuctions; this means that they will try and act as humanly as possible. They won't just stand still or circle a patrol. Cops will patrol the sky, find random criminal AI get in fights, have to come back into repairs. Though humans always can rain over the AI the same way they do in 'Oblivion'. Though like in 'GTA' if you completely disregard the rules the AI(Players included) will stop you whatever means neccisary.

I think this type of idea is perfect for, and will work perfect in BYOND. It just needs alot of effort and it could easily be the top game on BYOND. Which we could then advertise all over the web, bring in tons of members(Like MySpace/facebook with Mafia). Which in turn would have the potential to make alot more money; subscriptions could be implemented(Not gay monthly one like 'WoW'). And all the potential profits would be distributed to the team who help make this game faily of course(By a percentage of Quality&Quantity) of work contributed); Also no doubt BYOND would get a bonus for creating the platform we chose to work on. And I truly believe this game could be one that shows off BYOND: Like Halo: Combat Evolved to Xbox.

I really understand this message is saying a lot, especially by myself. But after being on BYOND for half a decade i've gotten to know all of this sites greatess; and personally know that nothing of this scale has ever done before. Think about a game created that defines BYOND by it's greatest and most dedicated members. With this project finished we will make a name for ourselves in the gaming map. BYOND is struggling and it needs a response from all us dedicated members, so please let this be it and not just use BYOND to troll, rip shitty Naruto games and troll some more. Let's make a name for ourselves. Let's make a game for ourselves that will get past this websites walls and attract players from all over the internet. This could possibly put us in the big leagues with all of the other MMORPG's; then players' will check out the rest of the games and realize this is one of the simplest and most awesome game maker program on the internet. While will get the word out and we'll have lots of new amazing games being made here.

Well if any of this means anything to you,
my key is: Bakasensei
Memnership: http://www.byond.com/members/Bakasensei

--> I started a baseline topic there just like this one here so we can just talk about the idea of anything like it. I just feel this needs to be done to put BYOND in the light with all the new 3d next-gen games comming out; this can start our own 2d revolution!!!

P.S. Invitations to join this project are open to anyone. I want this to be a project by BYOND to show BYOND off to everyone(Say your only good at drawing hair, well your our hair artist!) And everyone can participate; making a website, forums, graphics for the hub, helping with graphics designs, storyboards etc. I just hope the greats of BYOND will come and help me and BYOND with this and create a new fun MMORPG for kids and adults in households everywhere to play. If done perfectly we could have an "XBOX Live Arcade" version, or even a transfer to consoles like "3dS", "Play Station Network", and even apple products, "iPhone, "iPod", "iPad" etc.

I am completely getting ahead of myself, but don't patronize me for my ambition, that, well this is what starts great things. Thank you all so very much for reading.

Try it out while it still has public host files, cause they will be gone soon! The game isn't in a stable version, its there for the community/fan-base to find bugs and report them so I can make it stable and then continue on with updates afterwords. You can host the game if you want though there are no staff powers for the host. The game should atleast be in a playable state for now, though there are some things lacking like an Auto-Save/Load(Which I will add) Currently if you leave the game you have to pick a new team when you come back(If there is a team open). Also, there are alot of suggestions that are needed, so if your too lazy to sign up on a forums post them here. And I may make a BYOND forum for meh games later.

Version 0.6 will try to be a stable version, i'll keep fixing bugs till then, and when the update comes i'll add boats(Which the basics are already done, just need to draw them and add statistics and such). And probably more features then that when it comes to mind. So, I hope you play and hope you have fun!

Thats what we need! :P

It might attract more people, and may get BYOND a better income for now. What I was thinking about is prices like:
5 years - 50$(Cheaper than 5*15)
6 months - 10$(A lil more than 1/2 of 15)

And so on like that. So people could by a shorter membership just in-case they might quit BYOND but still have it affordable, and longer memberships for players who know/think they'll stay longer.

Just an idea, but we could think up of some good times/prices for this in this topic.

Alot of BYOND games have the usual old crappy AI, some a lil more advanced than others, but really just basic old if you attack me I chase and kill you, if i'm hurt I run and hide or attack from long distance kind of thing. Though i've been thinking up some ideas on advanced squad based AI.

Everyone wants a challenge from AI, and usually never get one, so what I was thinking is having a squad system, with formations leaders, and plans on how to play. Lets take a simple squad, Leader - Mid range, Medic, Long Range, and Heavy Cover -Mid-Close. Say there fighting another squad of the same build. Here are some commands they could complete to have order and a sense of battle.

When starting out they assume position, this is done by having the leader go where he needs to go, then the formation is set up like this l = leader, h = heavy, s = sniper, m = medic <>v^= direction.
^
l
<s h="">
m
v

As you can see its in a four direction system of importance. The back has already been covered, so the medic stays back there so he doesn't get hurt, right and left need to be covered so the heavy and sniper class go there so they can cover the sides. Constantly they will make this formation when not in battle, this could easily be done with a Formation() command which moves the team members to that position or as close as they can go. Also for movement I would suggest using a PathFinding demo so they know exactly where to go.

Now, they havn't spoted an enemy, and they don't know where they are, so they setup a snipers position.
^

^
m

Now here they let the sniper get ready to look out past there vision limit to find the enemy, while the leader and heavy units protect him close by, and the medic is in the back waiting for orders. With this done you can then do a vision check by using a 'cone' dynamic to see if any visible enemy is in that range and he would be found if he is. If not then they would move around in formation stopping randomly to check for enemies.

When found they will find the nearest way to the enemy and get into a fighting position: c=cover e=enemy

e
c

^^^
lsh
^
m

See, if they were over an elasped area, they would set up a sniper to try to take them out, though, if spotted they would go to a close quarters position like this, though so far everything would be done by simply moving people to correct positions.

e
v

^ ^
h l

c c
s m

This is done a little bit differently, the leader and heavy unit will engage at once, while the sniper and medic wait back behind cover, they would do this by checking for the nearest cover in range that is facing that is the general oposite direction of the enemy if you check(As in use a get_dir() proc that gets 4 exact cardinal directions, and compare if its get_dir()=turn(180) of the enemies, so its the exact oposite meaning you can hide behind it and be safe.)

Now, the squad can attack, but wait! They get overpowered by 3 more enemies and are forced back, what shall they do!

e
e e
e
c
c c ^ c
l

This is a simple and flexible formation, everyone will walk_away until they find cover, while under cover the heavy unit will fire upon the enemy when he can, while the medic runs to the most injured squad member down till the least injured. Until they have a general high HP, then they will strike back.

Everything will be the same even if a member dies. Except if a sniper dies they cant do both sniping formations, or if a medic dies then when they fall back they will strike when they find cover.

There could be more things added like during battles the medic can go through members in formation healing injured ones, and while in formation if one gets hurt badly he will run to cover while the others hold formation. Also the sniper might have a small formation where he goes 'solo' only if the leader gives the command to(Like if they are stuck down in cover and need backup the sniper will decrease in position a few tiles till hes in a safe spot then fire upon the enemy).

If you implement a thing like this then you could use it for most AI, and have them follow formations or orders, even in large war games you could have bigger formations or have multiple squads. There could be more advanced AI things to do with this like when raiding a building the heavy unit can open a door while the leader unit is one space back and throws a flash grenade. But really all this should be done through datums of the leader of the group and through checks to see what proc should be done at which time. Have a single proc that checks every second to see what to do, have multiple if()s and switch()s to check if you should Open a door, or go in different formations, and have ever command as a seperate proc that is called by these datums in the squad tree. So this datum would be handled as a 'brain' for the squad.

If anyone feels like making a demo or playable version of something along the lines of this, use these ideas in anyway, or if this helps you out please tell me so I can see it first-hand ^^. And if you have any ideas for this you can say so here.

Thanks for reading!(Now that I think about it this should have been a blog, or maybe even a Dream Maker post?!?!? eh nvm its not organized or ready for Dream Maker, maybe some day i'll post there though xD)</s>

Small Drawn Text!

A BYOND-Pixel-Art-Guild-Society-Scape Classic! - for teh lulz

Yes, you may use paint or photoshop for all your texting needs, but there are some cases when you can't use it, like when the surface the text is on is at a different proportion, or moved, or its way to small(2x3 pixels). Theres a small technique I use that I will teach you! Also if the text or images appear to small to read bring the image up in paint and put it in Large Size, it will be clear to you then.

As you can see(Though its hard) the text is extremely small and it says Sewer on the manhole cover, and Stop on the Stop Sign. You will hopefully will be able to create text even better or like this ^^

First: Find out what text symbol you will like to use, and what size it should be(I usually choose 2/3x3 - 2/3 is there because things like W or M go further than I or L.

Second: You will want to find its true details and where the lines are most visible. And when they are smaller, the spots where more lines take up should be the darkest, the less lines the lighter it should be. This is hard to explain in text, so here is the visual example:

Third: Switch the basic black and gray colors for the colors of your piece. As seen with my Stop Sign example, try to blend it with its background cause its so small, if there is white text on a very small background, the lesser seen parts will look light red/pinkish instead of a darker white/gray.

(I'll start making more like these, just random small techniques/tips to help people out with there pixel art struggles!)

And yes, it does say Mini Tut ^^
