Maybe some of the old players remember this BYOND game that had been ported to java. Decided to not give up on it again.

http://animalforest.no-ip.org/forum

Animal Forest is a role-play enforced 2D MORPG. Which basically means all out of character chat must be done in OOC (Out of Character) channels and all in-character chat must be kept in the non OOC methods of communication. Even though your character is anthropomorphic, your character has no idea what a computer is. You only know what is in the game world. I ask that you be creative. I've seen people go so far as creating religions and cults in the game.

Basically Animal Forest is like other typical MORPG's in the sense of the stat system. One difference though is that Animal Forest has no NPC's (Minus the teachers in The Hall. The Hall is the safe zone of the game where new players spawn. The only interaction those NPC's have though is that they teach your character skills). The game is almost completely player run outside of The Hall. Combat is purely Player vs Player. You also don't die when your health reaches 0, you are knocked out for a period of time. During this time, other players can loot your items. There are 77 Skills to learn in Animal Forest. Skills such as languages, combat skills (armed and unarmed), crafting skills, and even skills to increase your effectiveness at climbing trees.

I don't want to go into too much details as the Readme/Help link is below.

If you want to read the read me file (Which is heavily incomplete, but has valid information to get you started):

http://animalforest.no-ip.org/help

If you strictly just want to download the client from here:
http://animalforest.no-ip.org/forum/client.zip

Fair warning: Due to the no NPC things, without the players, the game is a little boring!

Animal Forest is also looking for a couple moderators as well. If you wish you apply, apply at the Animal Forest forums.
I'm currently looking into ways of getting Animal Forest out into the public eye. I've asked for it to be added to a few sites such as onrpg.com and gameogre.

Doees anyone else have some suggestions of free ways of advertising a free java MORPG?

Mind you, I don't mind shameless self advertising! :3

For those of you who remember Animal Forest, you guys may be interested that I have finally invested time into getting a VPS and a real domain name and other goodies.

Updates are coming along nicely and stability is my main concern for now though!

http://www.animal-forest.tk

For those of you who don't know what Animal Forest is:

Animal Forest is a 2D player operated (no NPC's except for skill trainers) MORPG with strictly roleplay rules enforced that was inspired by Hedgerow Hall.
All critters in Animal Forest are anthropomorphic (attribution of human characteristics to non-human creatures and beings). Animal Forest is also player operated as in, the game has minimal NPC's, the only actual NPC's are the skill trainers in the main hall of the game. In Animal Forest, you "role-play" as a critter in the vast forest. Players can engage in combat, trade, or general chatter. There are several magics and weapons and enchanted items for combat. Be creative with your character! You can be anyone! A thief, a body guard, a wandering merchant, a drunk bastard squirrel. Who cares?!

I don't really want to leave this post without some eye-candy, so here you go folks:

Maybe some of you have played before on the BYOND version, but it's been a few years (yes it took me this long), I finally have a stable java version of the game out.

For those of you who don't know what AF is...

Animal Forest is a 2D player operated ORPG with strict roleplay rules enforced. There is no OOC (Out of Character) in the game except in the OOC channels. Your character does not know what a computer is.
There are 12 critter characters to choose from: Hedgehog, Badger, Rat, Fox, Mouse, Squirrel, Shrew, Rabbit, Beaver, Ferret, Weasel.
AF is mostly player operated, as in there are minimal NPC's in the game, all trade and currency is made by players, you do not level up in terms of how many monsters you kill, the only NPC's are skill trainers. Players collect items through craft skills and scrounging skill or through barter with other players. There is no set currency of the game, but you can create your own coins through stamping gold/silver/tin/etc coins with your burrow name. Players can create burrows (Homes/Shops) after a certain level of achieved play time, and can build their burrow to their own likings.

http://animalforest.no-ip.org

Also! My apologies on the slow server, I am hosting this myself, and to top it all off I'm on a wireless connection.

http://dragonis.no-ip.org: Animal Forest web site.

Animal Forest is a strict RP game, designed by me and written in the java language, with a very similar feel of BYOND. You can sign up on the forums, post bugs you find, or throw in a suggestion. The game is in Open Beta Testing, so don't expect it to be completely perfect! But please be sure to check the game/forums out.

The site looks very basic right now, but I'll "pump" it up soon with interesting colors and descriptions and screen shots of the game. If any of you are good with CSS/HTML, feel free to contact me and help me better visualize the Animal Forest site.

You need to download the client in order to actually play the game. Just go to the downloads page on http://dragonis.no-ip.org/ (obviously), and extract the folder somewhere on your computer and run the .jnlp (the auto updating client).

A very important feature for animal forest is an auto updating client! So you don't have to constantly redownload it. Also a few bug fixed and extra features. Check it out.

Your name will save on the Username field, so you don't have to constantly type in your username.

Equipment is actually fixed now.
Items are fixed.
Sometimes your clients wouldn't load other players correctly, that's been fixed too.
Lots more, but it's escaped my mind. :)
