Another update video! With all of the boring stuff out of the way, I got to the juicy aspect of the game: combat!

http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=v0mkpZY2WEM&feature=channel_video_title

I'll try to explain everything concisely. A more elaborate description of the game's systems will be added to the Wiki. Speaking of the Wiki, SqueakyReaper has done an awesome job so far with it. Hi5.

Combat:
As seen in the video, you must approach a monster until you are 1 tile away and then click on it. The formula for damage is the attacker's strength subtracted by the defender's defense. Damage is also affected by "Types", which I will explain later in the post. Monsters ( in the video, they were Slimes ) attack you by bumping into you, and when they bump into any buildings and items you've created, they have a 20% chance of destroying it. In other words, you should kill monsters as soon as possible unless you want them knocking down your fortress. Militia ( in the video, they were Squires ) are NPCs that fight alongside you. They level up and become stronger as well.

Types:
There are three types of Gnomes: Brutish, Wise, and Swift. Each monster will have a weakness to one of these types. You deal 5 points of extra damage to any monster who is weak to your specific type of Gnome. Boss monsters will have no weakness.

Usable Items:
There are 4 items: Apples which restores 5 points of health, Swords and Shields which increase your strength and defense by 1 respectively, and Horns which spawn militia units. Currently, they only spawn Squires, but in the future more NPCs will be added. Since there is no "Inventory" in the game, you must protect your items by pushing them to a safe place. As shown in the video, you can construct a small building and push your items into it if you don't want to use them immediately.

I feel like I'm leaving something out, but until I remember what that is, post any questions or comments you have!

9 days left! I plan to blow the rest of the competitors out of the water! :)

it looks good, i'm happy to see that you didn't base the combat around random numbers

past that, the general design is pretty nice

I finally decided the random number stuff was taking it too far. I want it to have some detail, but not too much so that it stops being casual and I felt that system was a little over the top.

one question though, do the swords and shields passively increase your stats or do you have to click them to get stuff? It seemed cool that you had to put them somewhere safe but then when you clicked them it kind of seemed pointless to move them at all.

The point of moving them is you may not want to use the items. Why use an apple if you're at full health? Why use strength and defense power ups if you're already strong and the people you're playing with are weak? Why use the horn if there are no monsters to kill?

why not have make the sword and shield items have to stay alive to increase your stats, and the reason you put them in buildings is so that the monsters dont go in and destroy them?

Monsters currently can destroy them.

Do these power ups go away after a while? If not, I'd just use them immediately and deessttrroooyyyy.

No, but if monsters bump into them, there is a 20% chance it will destroy the item.
What I meant was after you use them, do you stay strong?

Yes. It's to help make you stronger because you're going to need all the help you can get. It'll be 30 waves of complete chaos that I doubt anyone will be able to survive.
Oh, I see now. You wanna store your powerups for all your friends to use, so you're not the only super-saiyan on the battlefield. I wasn't sure why you'd want to store them rather than use them immediately.

Indeed. If you're the only person fighting, leveling, and using power ups and you end up dying, the monsters are coming for the weaklings who were hiding next. And trust me: it won't be pretty.
Looks like you drew inspiration from a few Dwarf Fortress tilesets.

Almost everything graphically is inspired by Dwarf Fortress. The gameplay is completely different.

There is even a menu over to the right of the screen with all the hotkeys like in DF too. I plan to make the title screen look like this:

:)
just wondering, in the game why do all the icons have a background? the "gnome" has a black and the items have them also
