is it possible? that is all I want to know. is byond capable of a user controlled world. because if it is then the last two months of development on my part have not been in vain. I have been going over detail after detail of what would be necessary and what I already have implemented. so all I need to know is if I planned it out just right and yet kept it from being tedious... would it work?
BYOND can do this, the question is can you? (That's all I have to say on this matter.)
Here's the thing to remind yourself every second that you're coding with BYOND...

There is virtually nothing that can't be done with it... (from a game design standpoint... of course there are certain technological limitations... I.E. not being able to create a 3D wireframe modeled world...etc...)

So of course a completely user controlled world is possible... It just takes a lot of work on your part to give them the tools needed to control their world...and a world that can be controlled...

I can... it's in the process. What I am tlaking about is going way beyond gm features like making a room.(actually the users won't be doing any construction of there own.) the things I am working with are a set of guidelines that the users simply insert themselves into. like if a user wanted to be a shopkeeper they simply get a hold of some cash and buy a store. then they simply manage the stocking of goods and what not...(this works I have already implemented this.

Not true! (Said too much, need to shut up now...)

Nadrew I have a feeling you have something against this idea or you are working on something like this yourself. I could be wrong though.
In response to Canar
Nope, I have nothing against it. Look at what I commented on in SSGX's post, it had nothing to do with my opinion about your idea.
In response to Nadrew
so tell me nadrew... you spend a lot of time helping me and fellow gamers, so you must have a lot of knowledge on the programming end of byond... what are you working on?
In response to Canar
He works on what all other BYOND programmers work on. Odd little projects that never get finished.
In response to Foomer
Exactly, I have a few secret projects too that are turning out well. Motivation factor on two in paticular is High.
In response to Foomer
lol. i wish just once I could see some of the stuff you guys don't finish. then I would put it all together and make a supergame!
In response to Canar
:oP You can see some stuff I don't finish when I release it. Of course, chances are on my side because I don't have to finish my current project in order to release it :o)
Take a look at TextMUD 2.0. It's a totally user-controlled world. In fact, it is nothing until something is added to it. It's well worth the dollar you pay to use it!

i like that secret part. once you go blabbing about stuff you never get it finished.
In response to Canar
Maybe I'll show you Lunar Mission one day. Actually that used to be an "never work on again game" but recently I've recoded it and it's further than the first time around.
In response to Lord of Water
Technically, it's about as user controlled as a text file, though, and text files are free. TextMUD just gives you more easy ways to do stuff with the text file, and fancier formatting, and online capabilities...
In response to Nadrew
I suppose that little blurt was in regards to the 3D modeled world?

If so...I'd like to see you pull it off... I can actually see possible ways of creating and manipulating the models...but no way of displaying them adequately...

It would just be a matter of keeping track of points, line segments, and the resulting polygons that are created... But I'd say this is too much of a memory drain for a BYOND game... And then there's the aforementioned problem with displaying the outcome... Not to mention skinning the things...lol

Basically, from a coding standpoint...I guess it IS possible... But you won't be able to output anything worthwhile...lol
In response to SuperSaiyanGokuX
You'll see, you'll see...
In response to Foomer
see who wants to play a game with words. no offense lotw i just never got into that kinda stuff.
In response to Nadrew
lol... this is intriguing
