I went to the faq and looked and it took me to something about firewalls and routers. but then I just thought there has gotta be an easier way. what about that IP thing that lummox was telling me about?
When you host your game, click on the HOST button. Its on the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Then make sure its public and leave the port 0(zero), it will automatically pick a port for you.

Your IP address is a unique number assigned to your Internet connection. Basically, it tells other computers how to reach you. This is 4 numbers, each from 0 to 255, separated by a period: 123.45.67.89

If you're running Win95/98/ME, you can go to Run in the Start menu and type "winipcfg". Select your network card or dial-up adapter on the list of available adapters, and it will show what IP address you have. (Anything that says your address is 0.0.0.0 is the wrong adapter, unless you're not even online.) In Windows NT/2000/XP, type "ipconfig" instead.

Sometimes the IP address you see is not your actual IP address. If you're connected to a router, for example, that may give you an "internal" IP like 192.168.123.45, while your real IP address is actually shown by the router to the outside world. Basically, the router pretends to be you, and farms out traffic to different computers on the network. If this is the case, then you'll have to find out what your real IP address is, and you'll also have to tell your router that traffic on such-and-such a port should be forwarded over to you.
