PS3... worth it? in Off Topic

I love sony, I always have. I love them enough to buy a ps3 and I will... I got the money reserved and everything. But is it worth $600? Not to mention the $70-$80 games. It's expensive and I dont even know if blu-ray will beat HDDVD, and I really dont beleive it will. I heard that in 2008 they will switch all TV channels to HD and eveyone is gonna have to buy HD tv or they are screwed and have to buy some cheesy converter to convert it. So I dont think that blu-ray is gonna beat HDDVD for a second. So is a Xbox360 the best choice? I does seem to have much better games like the upcoming Halo3 or Oblivion and much more. I like final fantasy and stuff but it seems to me the ps3 doesnt have a very good good games in the startoff. Maybe it will improve...

what do you think?

I'll probably wait until halfway through the PS3's life before I think about picking one up. I'll let stores slash the price first before I shell anything out. All I hear about the PS3 is Blu-Ray and how it will require an HDTV (which I don't have) and I don't even know what Blu-Ray is anyway so I think I'll feel jipped for buying a console hyped around something that may not even be useful to me.

Then again, I was planning on waiting a couple of months after the Wii to see if the price would drop on that too. I'm just a scrooge at heart.

HD is only really good on obviously a HD tv which most people dont have. Seems like a bit of a rip for what is esentially a PC that you cant upgrade. I probably wont be getting one ever, but thats because i spend a lot on computers as it is

I am sure you are wrong. What you are thinking about is all air broadcasted channels turning to digital. This is simply to clean up our airwaves from the pollution of TV channels.

blu-ray losing to HDDVD

It is too early to say for certain, but blu-ray seems to really have the upper-hand. Even if it doesn't win in the market, the higher game storage capacity is great, and I can't see how Microsoft doesn't see the value in that. Also, you seem to say that because channels are going to HD, HDDVD is going to win, why would that have anything to do with it? Both blu-ray and HDDVD are HD formats. I have not read any stats on it, so I really can't tell which one is really the better medium, but we all remember beta tapes which where better than VHS and they failed. Only time can be certain.

So Xbox360 is the best choice?

Well, I cannot speak for you, but the 360 just doesn't offer me much. That is all personal opinion, but I plan on getting a ps3. Halo doesn't excite me (Too generic and is far behind the pack in many gameplay aspects) and neither does most XBox exclusives. Since the days of the PS1, all of my favorite games where produced for the PlayStation or where on it and other systems. I will be getting a PS3, you can get whatever you want.

Source please. If I am not mistaken, the $500 model won't even have the super HD ability that the $600 model does. I really doubt they would cut support for people who don't have HDTVs.

It is simply a disk type and format. It has a very large capacity and will hold about all the info you could want for a game right now.

I don't see how Microsoft didn't go with a format like Blu-Ray(Which is owned by Sony) or HDDVD(Which is owned by Toshiba) when games are getting to be multiple DVD size. They are going have suffer load times because they have to compress their data so much. PS3 will be able to give uncompressed data, being read straight from the disc. There is a good chance that this will make a large difference in load times, and allow for a lot more content in games.

On top of all that, HDDVD and Blu-Ray are in a fight to be the main media of choice for the next generation of movies. If Blu-Ray wins, guess what, you will already have a Blu-Ray disc player sitting next to your TV.

can I have the source for that? I dont know if it will be the same... but I heard that it will cost more, from various people.

they are turning to digital, but also be broadcast in HD which makes enough sense considering that there are various HD tvs that are not that expensive, I dont mean everyone being forced to buy some $6000 70' HD tv! There are cheap, normal sized, HD televisions.

So I can't watch HDDVDs on my PS3, I don't plan on crying about it. That is just a simple extra that may or may not become a great feature. That doesn't mean that you won't find games for the PS3 because Sony will still produce their Blu-Ray discs.

As for the increase in price of games, I have heard many rumors about it, but never seen any facts. Most people claim that Blu-Ray discs cost more, but Sony controls them, which means they set the price. They might cost more to product, but $10-$20 more? I doubt it. The cost difference in materials will be probably <$2, which means that it won't change the price of games. Why would people sell games for $70 on one system and the same games for $50 on another.

...becuase one system has a better disc. If you could buy food on a silver plate or a gold plate both with the same food on it, would they both cost the same?

You example is not that great. A silver plate and a gold plate have a much higher cost difference than a DVD and Blu-Ray. Blu-Ray-vs-DVD is more like foam-vs-paper plates when it comes to cost.

The price increase is possible, but it has been happening for all consoles for a while. They claim it is not odd to see a $50 PS2 game, but it is not rare to see a $60 game for all consoles. Any increase will be <$10 and any cross platform games will not have a price difference, I am sure.

Blu Ray is a blue laser used to read and write discs instead of the usual red laser. A Blu Ray disc can hold somewhere around 27 GB of data as opposed to the 4.7 of your average DVD. The reason a Blu Ray can burn way more data is due to the fact that the laser is about 1/8th (I think that's the difference in) the size of the red laser, which means less disc space being burned to.

Keep in mind that I said "All I hear", but I did make a big mistake when I mentioned the HDTV thing. What I HEAR is that to get the most out of the PS3's graphics I would require an HDTV.

Do you not see how different those are in meaning? I could easily go around saying "I hear that terrorists are attacking the US with nukes". I would not be lying, because I would be hearing it as I said it and perhaps my friend said it first, but that does make it true, but it also doesn't stop people from thinking it is fact. Granted, the those two situations are only alike because a message with no backing is being passed, the actual results of saying them are very different, but you get the point.

I have not read all the replies. But i know that only a few companies are workin with Blu Ray Discs...Like the PS2 most games were on CD after a year the majourity were all developed on DVD Discs. And sony -always- have faults whenever they release a new system. I suggest yoou wait a good year until you buy one.

Yeah, you are probably right about an HDTV being need to take full advantage of the PS3, but that is to be expected when you start going to games that make use of advanced graphics.

This is nothing new really. I have a old 13" TV in my room. Sure SNES games look fine on it, nice and clear. But try playing a PS2 or XBox game on it. You will be squinting your eyes to make out the blurred dots that should be letters.

On top of that, from what I heard, the PS3s will have a high native support for Linux, which if messed with much, will require a higher resolution than a standard TV can offer(source:http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=9290 , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ps3). No-doubt there are HDTV to DVI or VGA converters out there, so you could use your computers monitor for your games.

Bah. It's all speculation. Personally from viewing specs, and observing the 360 in action personally that the PS3 will provide a better console. But that's my opinion. Also, you might note that while the PS3 would be at it's best on a HD tv set, it does come with an alternate hookup for standard televisions. My biggest beef is the stupid controller design. <3 my Dualshock.. But then I really don't play my consoles near as often as this computer. So unless something good comes out I proably won't buy one of the new consoles.
