Going to need to learn how to use java for my next year of computer science.

Could anyone point in the right direction for a software that allows me to write, compile and execute Java applications?

I've found eclipse and it seems like the choice, but others may have better, lesser known programs. So I still ask.
You need an IDE*

My favorite Java IDE is JCreator.
Use the IDE that you'll be using next year.
I just use eclipse because it's what we use at my University for Java. However it can be a bit slow and if you have auto-complete on it sometimes freezes...
I second JCreator, it's got some pretty useful features.
ECLIPSE FOOL ( its what hospitals use )
JCreator: FEELS GOOD MAN
Eclipse!!
Wow you're in Computer Science too, so how has it been so far for you.
JCreator is a nice one to use. That was what we used in my Computer Science I course during my Junior year in High School.
Eclipse is more commonly used, but Netbeans is more friendly.
Eclipse is the IDE of choice if you're not making toy programs, and actually need to do some real work.

Damn - he went there.
This thing's about to get real ugly. War of the IDEs.
I am going to have Java on the next year of computer science too xD Did you have C and C++ this year?

But whyyyyyyyyy, netbeans refactoring feels like moving a supporting wall using a hammer and chisel to shift the bricks.
I would say Eclipse or Netbeans as well, but if you're given an IDE I recommend using it and then you can always switch later on.
Vote Count:
Eclipse - 5
JCreator - 3
Netbeans - 3

I think it's pretty obvious which IDE is superior here. Let's not continue this pointless discussion any longer and allow Gayle to download the winning IDE, which is Eclipse, and get on with his life. Thank you and have a nice day.
You can't go wrong with eclipse. It's impossible.

[edit]
for those saying that you should use the IDE you're given: we were given BlueJ, and I basically said "lolno" - most schools offer complete and utter trash, even at the college level. Use the right tool right away.
