Preventing Lag and Hosting

I understand good servers are what can prevent lag. And I know you can buy servers but it seems expensive. How does everyone else host their games, otherwise I may actually have to invest in a server.

Either they find a rich friend, someone who has a nice connection and wants to host their game all day in the background on their computer, or they go to digitalBYOND.

Or host it themselves until someone else offers.
