I recall back many years ago, I was dabbling around in Final Fantasy Legacy and it seemed the coolest thing ever to have certain players that had recolored character icons. The game's staff apparently gave these out randomly as they made them, as most of the people who had them didn't know why they had them, but it was just something that everyone wanted.
Give members the benefit of having more clothing/hairstyle/skin colors or whatever to choose from, things that'll make them stand out from the crowd, and it'll make people want to be a member.
If there's anything that people will pay for, its respect.

No one, subscribers, members, or otherwise, should ever get benefits that make them more powerful than others. Provide extra options, frills, things that'll make them "cooler" than non-members, but never make them more powerful. It ruins the balance of the game and encourages non-members to quit playing.
