This feature has already been implemented, or is already achievable with existing methods.
It would be nice if BYOND could release a version of the map editor that doesn't create massive amounts of lag (like older versions).
Ever since BYOND tried to put in the isometric thing, I've had to downgrade my BYOND in order to do any mapping whatsoever. e.g. simply clicking between Z levels takes around 8 seconds to complete.

Maybe just an option where you can toggle on and off whatever it is that causes the lag/lockups?

In any case, I would simply like to be able to map once again, cheers.
I've complained about this before, though I couldn't seem to find it.
First though I have it doesn't use hardware to draw map. Also if you scale to 50% it's even worse.
Maybe you have a bad computer. :/
yea i have the same problem, once i set the map to something like 50x50, it takes more time then it use to to go through z levels.

No its not my computer. On BYOND 454 I can freely graze the Z levels in a flash.
On any newer version it takes a full 8 seconds. Thats a lifetime in computer time. And relatively long in human time too!

I'm running it all just fine. even when the map size is up to 100x100. I fly right through Z levels. I'm thinking your processor might not be up to par.
I have the same issue.

Core 2 Duo T9400 2x2.53Ghz
4GBytes RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650
1066Mhz FSB

I'm pretty sure it's not just a "processor not up to par" issue.
Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13GHz
4GB RAM
GeForce 8800 GTS

Used Naruto Evolution map for testing (250x250x10) switches between Z levels instantly, scrolling doesn't have any lag.

Even if that were true, which its not, the difference shouldnt be that humungous!
My maps are 1000x1000x2 and 700x700x2. On older versions everythings smooth and instant.
On newer ones @ 50% zoom its the scrolling around map is atrocious, and @ any zoom, flicking between Z Levels takes the best part of 10 seconds.
Thats a massive difference that simply doesn't need to be like that.

Anyway:
Intel Pentium Dual CPU 2.4 GHz
2GB RAM
32 bit windows Vista (<--- possibly the cause? lol)
GeForce 9300 GE

IT is true though, I do fly through Z levels, my setup:

Win XP Pro
3.46GHZ CPU
512MB RAM
Intel graphics chipset (This counts as the video adapter is used to draw the map on your screen)

I used to have Vista on this comp. Vista eats Ram and Processor power like a fat guy on Cake. XP: takes 1/5 the ram
(64MB in comparison to roughly 330 MB)
As well as CPU speed. While Vista was running on this comp, my processor was constantly at 65%, with XP: about 7%.

If you have the means to switch to XP without loss of Data, then do so.

(Don't install for a multi-boot system with Vista, It will not run properly and you'll have to re-install, Vista uses a different boot system and as such neither OS will work and your data will be lost!)

Otherwise for those running XP and have this issue: I can't tell you really, maybe my processor is just badass? Ram doesn't really come into play much as the most you'll need to store when using DM is about 128MB (and that's pushing it).

Video adapter is important as well: if your card is something like an outdated chipset with no memory reserved for it, you're looking at trouble because the chipset/card will have to consult the CPU to get RAM and then go back and forth. a combo of slow CPU and bad video adapter will spell trouble for anyone.. throw vista on with it and I wouldn't be surprised at all.

Note: I know I sound to be bashing on Vista but, people hated Vista, not because it was a bad program, but that it was too resource hungry and, while running it, you had a very big chunk of CPU and RAM taken up to run something that just looks like a glorified XP. Windows 7 addresses a lot of the resource issues but not enough to beat out XP in my opinion. If you want to look good, Vista and 7 are great; If you want to run properly and quickly, stick with XP.
(though that's just in terms of windows OSs)

The problem is caused by the new minimap system. This was discussed somewhere before but I can't find it.
