Opinions on AllOfMp3.com

Lately I've been experimenting with different music sites, namely Yahoo! LaunchCAST and Napster. I enjoyed Yahoo for a very long time. I would recommend that over Napster to anybody who wants to be able to listen to a variety of music on their computer for a low price. It's cheaper than Napster and provides the same features. Napster has slightly better choice of music but not enough to make it worth it. Yahoo has alot of cool features that will help you find new music.

The problem came when I wanted to take some of these mp3s on my iPod. Neither of these sites provide MP3s. They provide copy-protected WMAs, which is all fine and dandy because some MP3 players can play these I guess. Not an iPod though. I prefer to own CDs rather than just the mp3 anyway. If you were to browse my iPod, you wouldn't find a single album on there that I do not own. However, lately I've been wanting to explore alot of music without having to wait until I buy the CD. I'd rather listen on my iPod than on my computer for many reasons (better sound system setup for iPod, don't need to sit at my computer, etc.)

Downloading the music using a p2p client is not something I'm interested in. Not because it's illegal, but because you just can't find ALOT of artists that way. The fact that's illegal doesn't help any.

I am testing out AllOfMp3.com right now, and I have to say, I like it alot. I'm pretty sure it's not 100% legal from what I've read. I haven't looked into it alot though.

Anyway, the site has an amazing database of music. I was even able to find a few Dream Theater bootlegs. And you can't beat the price. At a $1.5 a cd, it's a steal. Mainly, I'm impressed with the music selection, which is definitely the best I've seen so far.

[Edit]I'd just like to point out that the reason legality isn't too much of an issue to me is because I'll end up either deleting the mp3s or buying the cds in the end.

I find 128kbps working less and less fine for me as days go by :\ I am actually starting to notice a difference between mp3 and FLAC (which is alright) but what bothers me is that the difference bothers me.

Hragh!

Actually, it appears the consensus is that allofmp3.com is legal in Russia, just that the Russian law wasn't meant to be applied that way.
Other countries don't like that it's legal and want to force Russia to change their law.

As well as audio quality... mp3 is a pretty lossy audio format. An mp3 definitely does not equal a CD, as far as sound goes.

Maybe I'm just a quality nazi, but if you're paying money for music, it should at least be FLAC.

Ugh. http://www.pro-music.org/musiconline/news060602a.htm
I wish there was an mp3 site out there like Napster that sold you the actual hard copy CD when you bought the mp3s. I can't justify paying their prices when I can get my own copy of the cd for a few dollars more. I'd like to see a site that sold the CDs for the same price amazon does and also gave MP3 copies with each CD order, which you would recieve immediately after the order--Pretty much just a site like Napster the distributed the CDs as well as MP3s.

That's a bunch of articles, but the one I was specifically talking about is:

Ouch, that sucks. Meh, oh well.

That's a pretty cool trick. AllOfMp3.com is still worth my money though because of the amazing library of music they have. Alot of the music I listen to isn't very mainstream so it can be difficult to find.

IIRC, AllOfMp3 is the Russian site that isn't really legal, and is one of the major blocks in allowing Russia join some free trade organization or something like that. I read it on slashdot.

As far as those copy-protected wmas, what you can do, is grab any decent audio recorder (I recommend Wavepad by NCH) and set it to record from "Stereo Mix", and save the mp3s yourself.
