Actually he might, cause a couple years ago i wouldn't play a byond game with a horrible avatar.

I meant, a screen containing 'New' 'Load' 'Delete' wont push players away. Maybe the Avatar is as nice as Empirez's mother. Which is sort of nice... Anyway, a nice avatar with new load delete will not push player away. According to him it will.

Hah. What gameplay? Punching logs? AFK training? The thing about a lot of games on BYOND is that EVERYTHING is generic. You failed to see the big picture here.

For the record, yes I do log out of a game if it fails to impress me within the first moments. Just like you would stop talking to someone during the first few minutes of meeting them if they came across as weird or crazy, or would stop eating a sandwich as soon as something doesn't taste right. People judge your game immediately, not after 2 or 3 days of "giving it a chance".

I'm not being a child. I'm giving advice that is a result of being on this website since '05 and seeing BYOND littered with the trash a lot of you enjoy producing.

You're a guy with next to no game development experience who just recently begged on the front page for a base. Let me guess, bald guy in a diaper? I honestly have no reason to believe you know anything about what you're talking about.

Lolwhat. I never begged for a base icon. Hishido gave it to me, then some guy continued iconning it till he quit. I have game development experiance. Also none cares about you. As if someone wants a fail troll like you in his game.

And to look at this from the perspective of the developer, if you just re-use generic things you've seen in other games (usually this is unavoidable because the games are rips, but there are people out there coding punching bags from scratch) then you're not improving your skills. This is why I don't have high hopes that people who make generic anime RPGs will turn around and make fun games the next day. Even though they made a game (using the term loosely), they never once thought about game design. Maybe they tried to think about game design but just got a headache and copied features from another anime game instead so the headache would go away. Recycling game elements in the most unimaginative way possible won't help to improve your game development abilities. The problem isnt just that these developers don't know what they're doing, the problem is that they'll never know what they're doing.

The problem is, original games do not grab alot of attention. I would say NEStaliga is one of the few original games that reached a high playerbase...

BYOND's anime games attract some people, but don't confuse that with being successful. BYOND's anime games are like circus sideshows. Sure, people come to see the bearded lady because some people find that stuff appealing, but nobody is ever going to call the bearded lady a "successful person".

I don't think how successful a game is has anything to do with what the options are on the title page.

A game is like a pizza - sure, it may taste good with just cheese on it, but pepperoni, ham, peppers, and other toppings make the experience a whole lot better. Translated into game language, if you have superb gameplay, bravo. But players are going to detect when the other aspects of the game aren't up to par. If you have a crap main menu that's not helpful, or a soundtrack that's annoying, or artwork that's lacking consistency, it takes away from the overall experience.

I'm not saying your game is crap if you have NLD. I'm saying that your title screen, as well as every other aspect of your game should be taken into consideration and perfected. And in a unique manner.

I'm going to put this "title screen doesn't matter" stuff to rest now. Do you realize players complained enough about not being able to rearrange their characters on the main menu until Blizzard actually implemented the feature? That isn't the only thread in which players were demanding it - you can Google "wow character arrange" and see for yourself.

In Patch 4.2, the player's prayers were answered. Click the link, hit CTRL+F and type "The order". It should take you all the way down to the UI update where it says they added the feature to rearrange characters. Such an update may seem trivial you to, but that doesn't mean it's trivial to everyone. Not only that, I'm sure the players who were screaming "It's not important" have arranged their characters several times. :)

This is actually my most minor issue with fan-games.

Most byond games are just like that. Is it really that detrimental to the allure of the game? Not at all. Byond works on a key system, so its only natural that it is how it is. Its like complaining about MMORPGS for having
"USERNAME"
"PASSWORD"
at the title page. Would it be better if they had something more RPG-like other than those? Yes, but most likely people wouldn't know what to put in the fields given.

The difference is that it's relevant. In just about every MMO, you need an account. On BYOND, NLD is used for the same reasons bald diaper-wearing guys are used: because they see everyone else doing it.

Also, note that BLN and GOA both have the NLD thing and they have a good playerbase.

That doesn't mean a thing. I'm providing advice on how to make a professional game. If I wanted to tell you how to attract a legion of prepubescent Narutards, I would've written a totally different blog post.

Edit: Now that I think about it, the only people who would really care about the NLD thing for it to give them some sort of impression are game developers themselves. The kind of people who are trying to think up ways of making their game innovating and to stand out. Though the regular byond player wouldn't even care about it.

That's the issue - it appeases the 13 year old Dragon Ball-obsessed crowd. I'm talking about games that actually want some real professional and marketable appeal. The bad habits BYONDers have picked up won't work in the real world so-to-speak. NLD, bald guys in diapers, AFK and log training, subscriptions labeled as "donations", schizophrenic admins... it's only acceptable on BYOND. Outside this site, people aren't going to put up with that nonsense. Silk challenged fan-game developers to try and pull this crap elsewhere and not a single soul has done it yet. And even if they did, they would be too ashamed to admit they got a little taste of reality.

Also, to add... some of the most famous games on XBL, Ps3 etcetc use a system that can be compared to NLD.

You're still not seeing the big picture. The problem with NLD is that people use it *only* because they saw other BYOND games use it. In most cases it doesn't make sense (why do you need an option to just delete a save? why would you bother presenting a brand new player with any options? etc.). Having NLD in your BYOND game is a sign that you didn't put any effort into designing a game and you just copy game mechanics from other BYOND games whether it makes sense in your game or not.
