Any DotA fans, old and new, should be watching this broadcast! There is also a new trailer here:
This is a huge moment in DotA history. The broadcaster reported that on some websites, there were so many people tuning in to watch the stream that it caused the site to crash.
They're still picking heroes right now, tune in before the fight starts!
[Edit] Here at about 7:30 into the game, the match was paused by the referees. So far the game looks great in terms of gameplay and graphics. The battle itself looks one sided however. I can't remember what they're called in DotA, but for HoN players, Legion is owning Hellbourne.
[Edit 2] Here at 17 minutes into the game, I'll have to take my previous comment back about Legion owning Hellbourne. The match is now tied at 9 to 9. Hellbourne was just off to a rough start, but they're starting to pull off some decent ganks.
[Edit 3] Here at around 23 minutes into the game, Hellbourne gains a 3 point lead over Legion at 10 to 13. Legion tried to start a fight bottom lane but the initiation was all off and about 2 or 3 of them died.
[Edit 4] The game ends at about 38 minutes, with the score being 13 to 36. Legion was utterly demolished. They could barely defend their base at around the 30 minute mark. Hellbourne pushed the lanes constantly and whenever Legion came to fight them off, they got raped. It's got to be really embarrassing to lose a game that bad - thousands upon thousands of people were watching that. I hope they will be allowed to get new usernames once the game launches, or else they'll have to endure all the "I heard you got your butt kicked on the first live stream of DotA 2 trolololol" comments from the community. Also, I found out the real names of the teams now: The Radiant and The Dire, with Radiant starting off at the bottom left and Dire at the top right.
I've heard of the Dota name, but I have no clue what it is. I am currently watching the live stream, but the character selection process is taking a long time.

That's because it's a championship. It's not a game where players are just messing around and picking heroes carelessly. They really want to win so they really need to pick a balanced set of heroes to execute whatever strategy it is they have in mind.
But DotA is basically a cooperative action-game with RPG elements. You might like it. It's not one of those games where you have to grind all day. You team up with other players, choose from a large selection of heroes and battle it out with the primary goal of destroying the other teams base. Only con is that it takes some getting used to. There is a lot you have to learn before you become a good player. Your role, your opponents strengths and weaknesses, your skill and item build etc.
