So, I have tried various HUD styles and layouts for the building menu. This is the latest:

Hmmm. while there's nothing wrong with it, I'd have to see other variations before saying whether or not it's the best one.
I think it looks good though, font wise as well as presentation.

Well, one version was essentially a hotkey system. With common looking 1-9 keys that would each have a building on them. But that system was less than intuitive and not great looking.
Another version was a radial wheel menu, which is somewhat less effective, since unlike in a 3D game, your mouse won't always start at the center of the wheel anyway. It was also impossible to dynamically update such a wheel system with new options.
Both of those versions also always had the "Build Menu" image plastered at the bottom of the screen at all times, as seen in
, but now that only appears when you open the menu.

The color of the grass is a pain on the eyes. Maybe if it were more dull or had less contrast/saturation on the highlights
