"uname -r"
(without the quotes, of course)

I tried installing via wine 1.2 and ubuntu 10.10 64bit
it gave me a wierd error message saying that byond is already running

If I recall correctly, copying dlls is something that hasn't been necessary for a year or so now.
The only thing I recall is something about installing fonts to make text appear in the correct manner.

However, according to CableMonkey (who's a pretty smart fella)
Copy c:\windows\system32\mfc42.dll from a working copy of Windows (I used a Windows XP install) and place it in ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/

The byond installer executable should put everything where it needs to go by default. It's just a matter of running the installer via wine and clicking next a bunch of times.

You may want to add that in Unity, you would need to go to the dock (Press super or the top-right button) and type in "BYOND" to start BYOND.
