I believe this would work better as a Community post, read the forums description so you can post in the right one. Anyways, a long time ago I used freewebs and anglefire.

do i have to actually make a website? i was thinking i could just upload the file on a different website

A free webhost that will do the job would be Geocities. That will take care of you for what you need.

ok ive got a problem... i uploaded the files and put the link on the page but it still wont work..heres what it says: "Failed to download data (HTTP server returned unexpected status: 302 Found)." what is that and how can i simply upload a file and make it downloadable without making a website or paying money every month?

First post in a long long time. But here is your solution:

(Depending on how you want it downloaded megaupload offers a free upload service, anyone can download without any extra software.

http://megaupload.com

however, if the link has to work with some kind of auto-fetch system you will need to find a server host. If I get a few parts I might get a server up but its looking grim.

Dream Maker will zip your files how you want them to be. Download and Run your own game should be zipped under "World Executable Files".

Megaupload is bad, by the way.
In response to Tiberath (#8)
im using world executable files and ive tried a million websites even making my own but nothing works

You have to link directly to the zip file itself.

If your websites URL is http://www.mysite.com/ then the file you uploaded would be http://www.mysite.com/mygame.zip or something along those lines.

That's the link you have to give to the hub page.
Try this: http://www.mediafire.com/

Searching google for "free webhost" and adding hotlinking showed a few hits, and also a directory of free webhosts.

Mediafire is one of those jump-through-hoops download sites like megaupload or rapidshare. At best it's suited to large files, and it doesn't do direct links so it can't be used to host zip files for BYOND games.

Oh, lame. I saw it in wikipedia's comparison of file hosts. It said it used direct links, but I didn't bother to check. Sorry.

Ah. The only reason I happened to know it didn't was because someone had used it for a download already.
