I'm not a Gears of War fan myself -- if you like it, that's great, but I played the first one for about an hour before deciding it wasn't my bag. Still, this is an interesting article, and the reader comments include a cryptic allusion to a threat I wasn't aware of.

Great game program for the future fighting force needed to protect the USA. Gears of War 2 will provide soldiers the skills they will need in war. thanks for protecting us from tony

I was surprised that you didn't like Gears of War, but then I remembered that you don't use XBOX Live. It's a shame, when you play co-op or Annex you overlook the parts of the game that stink and start appreciating the combat.
When you're dodging from cover to cover, concentrating on active reloads while trying to maneuver your way into a favorable position you get this sort of 'complete combat experience' going.
You have to think strategically, but at the same time it's not deep enough that it gets in the way. Likewise you have to have technical skills, but they're not so important that your tactical thinking is wasted.

It's funny. After my first hour I hated the game. Hated it with a passion. It wasn't until like a week or two later when I got XBOX Live and needed something to play on it that I gave it a chance. Now I'm sitting here acting like a Gears of War salesman. =P
