Hello BYOND community,

I have been working on and off on a Role-playing game. Its based on Life. You choose an RP name and a job and start Role-playing. It is not a sandbox and you can do whatever you want. (Some jobs may be sandbox)

It nearly has everything you can find in your Life. Cars, Police, Doctors, Melee Fight, Gun Fight, Gangs, Thieves, etc. I have done the character creation system, a few HUDs, two jobs, food, day/night cycle.

Still working on a House system using Lummox Jr's SwapMaps and a few other things.

It is almost ready for Alpha Testing, so expect a new RPG coming soon. ;)

What this has to do with Design Philosphy? Well I wanted some opinions from you guys. What do you think of this game? Is it a good idea? Any feedback, ideas? :)

Regards,
Make sure you program very readably and make most systems "module-style". Make the systems plug-and-play, so you can add new things easy.

This may be off topic, but can I ask to see how you'd program something as a plug-and-player system? I don't really get what you mean by this.

You should start by planning out each specific system the game will have. Then program those systems as if they were libraries. Make them flexible and easy to read and modify. You may have to change them later. Don't actually build the puzzle until you make sure you have all of the puzzle pieces.

In case my metaphor was too vague, don't start building your game until you have all of the systems ready. Then start building your game and applying the systems.

Was that easy enough to understand, or was I too vague? I am trying to get better at helping people without stuffing them with information or starving them with too little.

Albro, how can think you're going to be able to see everything before you've even started making anything? I find that I create far better games when I'm just going with a feeling.

Maybe that's just me but I would agree with only a basic plan.

I am going from the perspective of creating a Design Document for your projects, which means you need to think out the whole game before creating it. There are obviously going to be additions later, which is why many times a Design Document is referred to as "living" - it changes with time.

Try to plan out as much as you can, to make things easier for you in the long run.

Fair enough I guess, I spent some time reading the Doom Bible once and that was pretty epic. Even if they went in another direction. Ha.
