Quit bugging me about themes. Honey Badger don't care, honey badger posts themes whenever he feels like it. Besides, we used a scientifically sound method to determine the best possible themes for this year, and they are:
  • For Science!
  • Mirage: Illusions and things that aren't really there. Or any other meaning of the word.
  • Zodiac: Use any of the symbolism of the zodiac, just make sure that it impacts actual gameplay.
  • Honey Badger: Use either word. Use both. Surprise me. Just use something.

This year we had a hard time thinking of themes, so you get four to pick from. Whichever you pick, be creative with it. Find meanings that I wouldn't have thought of; do something unexpected. Whatever you do, make sure that the theme impacts actual gameplay, and is not just a skin on top of the game.

And now for a little house keeping. Remember to submit your entries to [email protected] by 12:01am (Eastern time) Monday morning. In other words, you have about 48 hours from the posting of this message to submit your entry. All source files will be released to the public to view, but developers will retain rights to their work. If you don't want your files released to the public, be sure to say so in your submission email. Prizes will be awarded via paypal to the address of the submission email. Be sure to include your BYOND key in your submission email. Is there anything else I'm forgetting? Edit: Yes, be sure to include which theme you chose in your submission email.

Have at it, For Science!
Time to stay up all night! =D.
Zodiac it is. :)
Now you know why I beg people for theme ideas. I don't know why people still let me choose them.

...Blame D4RK3 54B3R, he helped.
Can I submit more than one game?

Sure.
Someone asked me why "Honey Badger", so I've included a link to its entry on "Know your Meme".
Does "for science" basically open up anything sci-fi?
Oh, and also do we have to use only one of the themes or can 2 or 3 be incorporated into one entry?

Sci-Fi is open, just so long as there's actual "Science" in the game (whatever that means). "Gauntlet" where people throw beakers of corrosive acid at each other could work, "Gauntlet In Space!" not so much.

You only have to use 1. You should tell me which one you're using in your email, as sometimes this isn't very obvious. You can use more if you want, but you only get judged on one.
Would using a copyrighted character be grounds for a dq? Also, can it be any interpretation of the theme, as long as it's clearly/distinctly clear that the theme is still applicable?

"Or any other meaning of the word" - is this basically applicable to all the other themes as well?

I would think that 'Originality' is a big thing for GiaD. So I would assume that using copyrighted material from another source would be frowned upon. And I would strongly suggest against it.

I'm guessing he means using a character copyrighted by someone. Like Goku from DBZ, or Sasuke from Naruto.
You could use their likeness in a way, but I'd suggest making it generic. Different name.
Ganing has the right idea, though I'd never do an anime character. The reason why I ask is particularly because I'm not sure how many other "characters" would fit this archetype. It's very theme-specific. But I can figure it out.

Just wanted some clarity.
Is there a BYOND chat program that people are hanging out in for GIAD? I'm currently intending to stay in The Saloon, but don't know if there's another favourite at the moment.

Not actually starting on programming until tomorrow (in ~14 hours)
I'm sorry, but...these themes are kind of lame. Lol. I think Zodiac is good, but the others...WUT

I think we haven't had a chat channel like that since the second GiaD, so TSaloon is your best bet, probably.
Is it fine if I use two themes?
