Poll: What date would you prefer for the GiaD event?

12th & 13th, Let's get this over with 59% (13)
19th & 20th 9% (2)
26th & 27th 13% (3)
I'm not participating 18% (4)

September snuck up on me this year, and I had completely forgotten about the Game in a Day event until it was brought up yesterday (during a game of Jeet Kune Do).

Like last year the event will be held on two days over the weekend, to allow more people to fit it into their schedule. That leaves three possible weekends this month, which are listed in the poll above. I'm leaning toward the 12th and 13th, but I don't know if I'm overlooking some school thing that would get in the way. (Please note: Comments about why you'd rather have a specific date will weight much more than votes in the above poll.)

We also need a theme (or several). I've thought up a couple that could be used, but I'd rather hear other ideas first before I force all of you to make the games I want to play. If you have a theme you'd like to see, just include it in a comment on this post.

All other suggestions are also welcome.
theme: apocalypse
Sports could be a nice theme.
I was waiting for this post!

Whatever is chosen, I'm good for.

Also, shouldn't theme suggestions come through e-mail? And maybe from non-competitors?
In terms of a theme, for some reason I'm thinking of sky-like things. Despite not having played it in a year or two, FFXII comes to mind, particularly Vaan who dreamed of having his own airship.

So theme words that come to mind...sky, airship, horizon... maybe even things like adventure or some such.

I'm gonna throw in "steampunk" as well.
I'd like to do it again, it is always fun. I might not be at home due to Eid later in the month, so I'd say the first weekend, I'll still be fasting but its not so bad that it stops me from doing anything.

I just got my wife into playing FFXII, so I'll vote for a sky theme too :p

Last year I asked for theme suggestions via email and got none, so I figured I'd go more casual this year.
I just want to say, you're very handsome, Iain.
Steampunk theme.
I'm thinking 'time travel' would be a good theme.
Do you plan on holding a poll on the theme in the forthcoming days? A poll which contains all of the theme suggestions said here and your own suggestions?

Not a chance. The idea is that the theme is unknown until the event starts. That way people can't start programming it until the theme is announced. I'm okay letting people suggest themes in the open, because if anyone assumes that I'm going to choose the most popular suggested theme, and then starts programming a game early, they're going to end up having to throw out that work. I'm looking for ideas, not consensus.

Who's to say people don't already throw together a bunch of modular systems for their game in a day?

There are something you just can't confirm, he's doing the best he can by submitting the theme when the event starts.
Are there any prizes for this contest, or is it just for fun?
INTERNET FAME AND GLORY!

Fine with me. Plunder Gnome uses IP_px and the dmp_reader, and that was a GiaD entry. I guess I could have put them together into a Zelda clone and then tried to slap a Plunder theme onto it once it was announced, but I don't think that would have worked very well. My point is that the actual gameplay of PG was determined by the theme and could not have been planned in advance, and that's what makes a good entry.

It's not a contest, just an event, so there are no prizes. It is for fun, recognition (I'll be awarding medals), and most importantly: to make you a better developer. Developers release finished projects, but many of us at BYOND who have been "developing" game for years have never released a project. The GiaD forces you to examine what is necessary for the game, and to cut everything else that'll keep you from meeting your deadline. Google Nanowrimo for more info.
