Programming Job Offer?

Poll: Should I go with the programming job?

Yes 63% (19)
Maybe 20% (6)
No 16% (5)

Just today I was offered a programming job that would last until the end of next semester. It would be data-mining for an organization here in WV. I would have to learn Java though. The pay is around $9/h and would be working approximately 10 hours a week. I already have 20 hours a week for classes, though, which might be reducing my current 5 hours of sleep to "sleeping whenever I get a chance". However, I wouldn't mind actually having a source of income for a change...

Take the job, yeah you lose some sleep but your getting experience, I rather have a easy 10 hour a week job than having no job at all. It gives you alot of life experience too, that computers will never give you, and I know some of the byonders will argue other wise. Its worth it, its only a couple ours a day, and some more money in your pocket, and its great for your CV

Data mining can get fairly interesting, apparently. At least the theory behind it. (I've never actually done it.) But at that price it sounds like you'll be doing drudge work rather than anything fun.

Java is pretty easy if you've used a real programming language. A little tedious is all.

If you're tempted, I'd say learn a bit of Java first (you've got days, that's plenty ;-) ), and then tell them that you'll do it but only if they increase your hourly rate. $9 an hour is pitiful, especially for an IT job! I wouldn't take that job, even if I didn't already have an easy AUD$25/hour job (about USD$21/hour) that lets me choose my hours.

Sleep is important. Don't let anything get in the way of that. Then again I'd be surprised if you couldn't arrange your time to make sure that you did still have enough time to sleep, especially if they let you fit that 10 hours into your schedule whenever you like.

5 hours isent a lot, at all. then going from less than 5 hrs. Not worth it at all. Even if you'll be able to pick up java easily, it wont be worth it without sleep.

I didn't. My programming instructor came up to me and asked if I wanted to take the offer. I have a week to respond.

I've never done data mining though, so I'm not sure what it entails, and I've never used Java [and only heard bad things about it].

Meh, java is okay* once you get used to it. I'm forced to write VB. =/

*in as much as, y'know, java is punching yourself in the face whereas VB is stabbing yourself in the groin.

I don't care at all about how much I'm paid at the moment. All that matters to me is getting real world experience and getting the chance to prove myself. I'd do it.

Sucks about the java, though. Kind of annoying working out of your comfort zone.

Where the heck did you post to get offers, anyways?

I'd go with it. At the very least it's something that when pointed to on a CV you can explain 'oh yes, my parents were paying for my education, so I decided to get a job so I wouldn't have to hit them up for spending money all the time. I had to learn Java which was a little tricky in such a short period of time but it was well worth it'.
It's all fairly impressive, but the most important part is that you did something that wasn't easy in order to secure the job.

Ill let you be the judge of whether that job is worth your time. Keep in mind I make 10 dollars and hour working in a fast food pizza joint.

Guys, it's 9 dollars an hour, 10 hours a week.
