The dvergar (or "dwarves" as they are often called by humans) are an ancient people thought to be native to the Dragon Spine and found frequently among the Iron Hills. Though shorter than a typical human, dvergar possess a robust frame and are a hardy people able to withstand harsh weather, difficult terrain, and the constant threat of goblinoid attacks. Skilled miners, masons, and smiths, dvergar creations are renowned for their craftsmanship and durability. Dvergar also enjoy a reputation as sharp traders and excellent soldiers.
Those who would do extensive business with the dvergar, however, must first earn their trust, which is no easy task. They are an insular, clannish folk known for being humorless and often dour. Those who earn the title of "friend", however can count on them as brave, steadfast allies with warm halls and some of the best brews to be had. Dvergar value their families highly and will risk any danger to protect a loved one. Thus, a favor, or insult, given to a family member is rarely forgotten. Dvergar frequently identify their clan affiliation in colorful tartans and intricate banners.
The dvergar love of fine food, metal, stone, and alcohol is well documented, as is their dislike of waterways and open skies. Dvergar seem to maintain passable relations with the Ælf, despite very different temperaments, and ancient pacts and rivalries are not unheard of. Dvergar despise the goblinoids, with whom they have struggled ceaselessly for living space, and will often attack them on sight. Similarly, dragons are regarded as an ancient and terrible threat to dvergar homes.
