I was a part of BYOND when all of the nubby rips and copies were running around posting 5345234526 versions of the same game so...I'm not quite comfy with the whole "Member or condemned" thing. I recently played around and created a small word-maker demo thing that I was kind-of wanting to throw into the demos section since it could be very helpful to a nu- I mean- designer one day (I don't know, random spell names? Vague, new language? A lot can be done with a random generator and some creativity). I come on to realize- I can't. Darn.
I'm not actually upset about the membership thing, in fact I support it. But I only support it to a point. Designers that don't have any way to get an account except through gifting or something are a little left in the dust since I don't see a single place I could throw a link to show how useful my programs might be. I personally wouldn't mind if someone just simply took the file and hosted it on their own account (don't change the owner's name in the code files, however, that's just cruel). I have no connections (kinda..I made friends here but I personally prefer to be more of a shadow on the site) so I can't just ask someone to do that...
If there is no way for me to throw my program in (or anyone else their own games or whatever) without a membership, then I guess I will keep my demo to myself...Oh well

You can always put the game/demo/lib on an external website and just point users to it. The hub, of course, makes this more convenient, but it is not essential.

Well, if the demo is involved an requires a writeup, I suppose you could post such a thing to the tutorials/snippets section; otherwise, off-topic would be fine (though not ideal).
I agree that it's kind of silly to require membership from users who are just trying to contribute and not really advertise their wares, and one thing we've been considering is allowing free hubs that don't have live! listings (which is where most games benefit). Or I suppose we could make the exception for demo/lib/tutorial hubs, but I actually like the filtering there because, honestly, most of our good contributors are Members so it keeps out a lot of junk. | |

But doesn't some one have a utility that offers src code for tokens or something. I remember seeing something about it on the forums once. I'm not sure if that takes demos though. | |

I like the thought of perhaps a monitored contribution thing. The files are sent somewhere to go through an inspection of some form and approved ones are posted on hubs. I understand there are the nubs who are like "I HAVE THE 500th SOURCE OF THIS GAME PAY ME!!" so I'm in support of some form of a filter. Green Lime, I'm pretty sure he was just generalizing. Many contributors ARE members, mostly because they simply support BYOND and want to help people as well. I won't be getting my hands on a membership ANYTIME soon so I'm the little bit tat want's to help but is a bit limited. I wouldn't mind submitting my work so it can be approved or not however. | |
Instead of posting your demo in Off Topic, I don't think that anyone would condemn you for posting it in Tutorials & Snippets. There are some pretty bad tutorials that can be found there anyways.
Personally, if I was searching for code and demos to explore, the Off Topic section of the forum would be the last place I would check. Not only that, but I'm sure it would feel much more rewarding to post it anywhere besides "off topic". | |
lol, I already posted it there before checking back up on this..
My problem is that the libraries/demos forums seem to all go to hubs. I also think I would be spamming it at this point. I guess if a moderator could move it (if possible) it wouldn't hurt :/ EDIT: nevermind, it's not even in off-topic anymore | |
You can move your own posts, just click the first little icon on your posts, when you hover over it, it should say "Move".

Referring to edited post- I guess I will just post it in the Demos/Libraries regardless. I'm going to check again, then post the topic in the right forum.

I actually moved it to Tutorials and Snippets as I physically can't move it into Demos/Libraries - the Demo/Library board is linked to HUB entries like the Game Updates board is, so I can't just push something into it.
