Dude, Im from south jersey. Latin Kings and gangsta disciples is big as hell down there. I grew up with gangs all around me. Now I live in harrisburg, pennsylvania (the capitol) where crime is happening all the time. You dont need to be from CA to be in "true" gang. Stop and put down the stereotypes. You know that was no real gang that jumped your friend, just a bunch of idiots (possibly). Real gangs strike hard and fast without the nigga knowing they was even coming. Gangsta's arent loud mouths at all.

As my friend would say, "Gangs are for fucking pussies who can't fight, thats why they need to gang up on 1 person".

I find that true. For example, a couple of weeks ago my friend was in a fight. It was supposed to have been mano e mano. Than after my friend frooked the other whore up. 5 of his gang mates jumped in. My friend took down 3 of them but was overwelmed.
