False advertisement. in BYOND Discussion

I'm not entirely sure if this is against the site rules, but I'm tired of games adding tags to their description so they get listed in other search results.


Example:
http://www.byond.com/ members/?command=search&text=Pokemon&type=games&sort=pop&liv e=1

Three Bleach/Dragon Ball games are listed because they added "Pokemon" in the description so they would get listed when players search something different. This same thing happened a couple years ago.

It's very aggravating and I would love it if a mod would do something about this.

I just see a few hubs saying that it's not Pokemon, or they have plans for a Pokemon game just mentioned in the descriptions.

Which is not needed, seeing as the name of the games are Bleach: soandso.

Just disorganizes the searches and drives my OCD nuts.

That's quite the opposite: not attempting to hide it at all and being obvious to the careful onlooker.

They need to stop letting every noob under the sun create hubs. From this point on, they should limit new hub creations to members only.

I disagree. I hope to be getting off of my lazy ass and putting up a HUB entry soon (along with squandering some old ones) and my membership ran out this week, so naturally, I disagree.

I think instead of keeping people who aren't members from making hubs, they should just take away the hub abilities of certain reported people.

That or no hubs desc with Naruto, Bleach, DBZ or pokemon in the titles xD. Of course that'd never work, but it's a thought.

Then their's no limiting it unless it's only for Byond Members. I personally wouldn't like creating hubs as only an option for members. I think creating your own hub is a cool thing for game makers, I look forward to it.

I personally have been bother a little by those descriptions, it makes searching a bit messy, but it's something we have to deal with unless some kind of limits are made.

That would inadvertently slap a price tag onto the BYOND software.

Well, you would still be able to make and play games, but you'd have to advertise them outside of our site unless you wanted to pay the $18. We could even support a "private" hub that would work the same way but wouldn't put the game into the search. It's an idea I've considered for years, considering that almost every good game is already operated by a member.

I actually agree with this.
The only problem with this is that some developers with good games might have financial issues and couldn't afford a membership.

Then again $18 is still pocket change for a lot of people..

You don't need a hub page at all for players to be able to know about and play your game.

Of course, everyone's "awesome original game that's just round the corner, but isn't worth spending a couple of foot-long subs on". Incidentally, that's a couple of foot-long subs to cover all of your BYOND website needs for a whole year.

Of course, if BYOND bankrupts because it continues to financially shrink as it is currently, you don't get a hub for your original game anyway, do you now? No such thing as a free lunch, if we're not paying for things to tick over, Tom is and eventually that stops being workable for him. They give you a completely free framework, netcode, mapping system and account auth system. $18 for some extra presence of the website is pretty fair in return, I think.

Now, it may be this isn't the monetizing route that best serves BYOND, but there has to be one or BYOND ceases to operate as a business. So have you got any better ideas?

I personally think you should have to pay to become a BYOND Member to use any of the developer tools, while it's free to play the games themselves.

Though, because of all of the cheapskates on here, all of these Naruto and Bleach games would cease to exist, because a lot of kids are too cheap to buy memberships, which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, but it would stagnate growth.

The situation is fairly stagnant currently. I suppose the question there is, would BYOND free-fall from that?

It is certainly an indirect solution to the initial problem highlighted by OP though.

I think if Tom did announce that, a lot of people would be angry, and no doubt a lot of the "DBZ, Naruto, Bleach" crowd might leave. But perhaps it would be good enough to purge the community and perhaps attempt to bring in a new crowd, one that would benefit BYOND more.
