Following some discussion on the main BYOND forums regarding the future of BYOND on Linux, it has been concluded that for the foreseeable future, the best mechanism for obtaining a fully functioning graphical BYOND client on Linux would be to contribute to the WINE project. With that in mind, I have contributed some test data for 1.0.0 as well as confirmed Bug #13057. This now places the bug into a NEW state, meaning it'll start to slowly see some progression from the core team, over the medium term.

BYOND on Linux exists not only in the desktop environment, but for servers, too. This is of course our native solution, currently available at the Downloads Page. It would be nice if we could package these releases better, to take advantage of Linux package management. This would make version maintenance a lot easier for people deploying DreamDaemon servers. To this end, I've made a post on the forum, hoping to collect information to assist in this project idea, please provide feedback.
Eh, I don't really like Linux, but I might consider trying it soon because Windows is being a big bully.

Nice to hear. I should probably warn you, BYOND on Linux is a bit shakey. There is a Linux project called WINE which allows you to run things intended for Windows on Linux, this is how we run BYOND.

If you decide to explore Linux further, or would like to ask us some questions, don't hesitate to drop us a line on the forums. We'd be happy to hear from you!
Great work Stephen001 nice to finally see a dedicated BYOND on linux person. :)
Ideally I'd like to take the hassle of the native solution off the BYOND staff's hands, in the long-term. It should mean they spend less time running tests/builds for linux and more on say ... enhancements in the VM. However I really do think we need to demonstrate our ability to maintain ourselves before they'll even consider starting to hand over to us.

Incidentally, I'm interested to hear what distros everyone runs.
I don't believe BYOND should become open-sourced. But that's for another thread.
I see that one of our bugs have became popular vote; and is now set to 'NEW'.
Hopefully we should see a fix, in a few years.

That's good to hear, even though I doubt I will play many BYOND games on Linux, mainly host them, so a GUI is not on my priority list. I am currently running Fedora 8, with Ubuntu Ultimate as a back up.

That's fine, the reason I am interested in distros is mainly due to the native linux package, which is basically host only anyway. I already have an ebuild for a 'byond-core' package working in Gentoo. Once I'm happy with that, I'll move to RPMs for Fedora/REL.
I use Ubuntu myself (well, Debian in general). Never had a single issue with it, regardless of how much the Linux newbies complain that it's not as secure as the other distros. It's as secure as you make it, like any other distro.

I did make my own APT package for BYOND a while back when I was doing DMCGI installations fairly often, but I have no idea where I put it.
I run Fedora 9 on my secondary drive. Though its only secondary due to the lack of good BYOND support. Hopefully you'll help change this for all of us.
Okies, then I do require an RPM repo too.
Ubuntu 8.04 (and 8.10) here.
Most people (including myself) are running Ubuntu 8.04; I haven't tried out Ubuntu 8.10 yet, but I probably will in a VM.
I have a couple Ubuntu distros, including 64-bit, that I haven't gotten around to installing yet. I will probably install 64-bit next.

HAHAHAHAHAHA ... sorry couldn't help myself byond support where i see none anywhere not even on the windows side.

hhhh
what must i do to let BYOND
work in WINE (do i need to replace ddl s
or something??)?
Pretty much, you need to do an override on ole32.dll, that should get you past the login stage. Personally, I can't get into games, but it seems other people have no problem with that.
