I've pushed a new update to the hub, which changed several things internally and added a slew of new features.

Changelog (1.5)
+ Added sequence traps, such as the hole. (Thanks DarkCampainger!)
+ Made blade traps deadlier and smarter.
- Removed the flying shoes for balance reasons.
+ Added a text rendering system to improve the look of messages.
+ Added a clear time to the win screen to see how long it took you to win the game.
+ Added a button to the win screen that allows you to publish your death count and clear time.
+ Added banana traps. (Thanks Super Saiyan X!)
+ Added arrow traps. (Thanks Kaiochao!)
+ Keys now have infinite uses.

This will be the last update to Green Orb Quest for a while, as I need to start work on my February 1GAM entry.

If anyone is interested in toying with the source code, creating their own maps, or adding new traps or items, then the source code can be found here.
Crusader's Cavern is an action RPG revolving around solving light-based puzzles. It was created by SuperAntx as part of Oasiscircle's End of the World contest, where it took first place.

Crusader's Cavern's gameplay consists of reorienting mirrors to guide a beam of light to unlock doors, and fending off monsters when the lights go out. You come equipped with a sword to stab things, and a shield to block attacks.

All programming and artwork was handled by SuperAntx. The art is minimalistic, but it gets across what you're looking at. The effects used when the lights go out is particularly nice.

The music was composed by Deceased Superior Technician.
ASCII - At Symbol Causes Inexcusable Injuries - is a fast-paced and addicting shooter developed by Magicsofa and released in mid December. Players can take to playing by themselves or going multiplayer to fight waves of enemies on six different maps, using a plethora of different power-ups.

ASCII is one of very few games that utilize BYOND's text mode. The players and maps are rendered using text characters rather than pixelated graphics. Despite this, it manages to be visually pleasing and the gameplay is very smooth.

For those with a competitive edge to them, a leaderboard exists to climb to the top of.

Magicsofa has mentioned an update forthcoming featuring a new game mode, customization, and new music tracks.
Based on what I've learned, this is what I believe a procedure looks like "internally". Every procedure (and verb) has an args list for arguments, it has the . variable which is returned at the end of every procedure, to which the default value is null.

If I had to guess, named arguments are an associative list? Maybe.

This is kind of a silly thing, but I like comparing languages and how to write basic functions within them. I've used DM for years and I'm just learning JavaScript; here's how I would write an add() and sum() function in both:

// DM
proc
add(a, b)
return a + b

sum()
. = 0

for(var/i = 1 to args.len)
. = add(., args[i])

// JavaScript
function add(a, b) {
"use strict";

return a + b;
}

function sum() {
"use strict";

var i,
total = 0;

for (i = 0; i < arguments.length; i += 1) {
total = add(total, arguments[i]);
}

return total;
}

I'd love to see others write these two functions in other languages. :)

An upcoming challenge has been circulating around the indie development community called One Game a Month. Developers have been pledging to stick with the challenge, starting January 2013 and lasting all the way until December 2013. The challenge? Make a new game every month! As this is something we as BYOND developers can participate in, I'd figure I'd post it here.
Hey there guys. I've been pitching an idea around in my head for a few days now, and I've decided to poll the community: if given the option, would you pay to participate in a learning course for the DM language?

Obviously, there exists a wide variety of learning materials already, but some seek others to tutor them in the language.

Is this something anyone would be interested in?
Myriad is a turn-based dungeon crawler developed by Oasiscircle in a 24 period on November 17th, 2012. It features simple and addictive gameplay, as well as random dungeon generation; no two games are the same.

The graphics, drawn by Oasiscircle, are very minimalistic and utilize a three colour palette. The low fidelity music matches the aesthetic very well, invoking a very retro feel. Oasiscircle created the sound effects himself and purchased the music from audiojungle.

It is a single player game, but you can compete with other players via the leaderboard. Your score rises as explore the map and kill major targets, which are represented on the map as a skull and crossbones.

At present the game is close to completed, with Oasiscircle verifying that new monsters and items are on the way, as well as the ability to save and load.

This is not my contest! I am merely cross-posting this from the TIGSource forums as it is something BYOND developers can participate in.

TIGSource is hosting a free form competition from November 1st to December 1st. The only rules are that you must follow the theme, all work must be done during the month of the contest, and that your game must run on Win32 platforms (which BYOND does!)

The theme of the competition is Sports. We have a few sports games, though they're all really old so I'm not sure if there's much of a presence on BYOND anymore that enjoys or develops sports games. But this does appear to be something BYOND developers can enter, so I figured I'd make a thread about it.

The official thread for the competition can be found here.
