The Overlooked

Many of you reading this are probably programmers who either know this already, don't care, or you've never thought about it.

There's a special "hidden" element to game making that people seem to buzz over when making a game. It's a pretty decent step in making games themselves, and, (as you can guess from my psuedo-header) I feel that it is overlooked quite often. What am I talking about? Encouragement.

Encouragement

I know what you're all thinking. "What does encouragement have to do with making a game? Clearly the programmer should be able to churn out all of the code in less than two months (ignoring any extremely busy college schedules *hint hint*)!"

You're absolutely right. A programmer should be able to handle everything from their basement, working from 10pm to 4am every weekend. That's their job. But why should their job be working alone in a basement for 6 hours a night? Thus, where encouragement comes in.

See, if you're working on a game, you get frustrated, you lose desire to work on the project, what keeps you going? The encouragement from others around you.

People underestimate the power of encouragement. It is a great driving force. When my friends tell me that they're excited to see my games work out, I get more desire to work on it. I get the fervor necessary to pull those 6 hr nights.

Ask any programmer, when they hear people interested in their game, asking questions (obvious not "When will it be done?" and the like) they like to share their ideas, perhaps get a few from you; they love it.

Conclusion:

If you want someone else to finish their game, don't sit around waiting for it to happen. Ask questions, offer ideas, encourage them. You are as much a part of the game's creation as the programmer. So if you're interested in a particular project, go to the programmer, leave messages, send emails. Find them in-game. Ask them how they're doing. Because when people show interest, programmers are more willing to churn through that extra work to complete their game sooner.

Man, I probably should've made the draft instead of just typing up my thoughts. I don't think this fully conveys my ideas... oh well.
You truly are an inspiration. Was LordAndrew your father?
I encourage people to stop making these stupid post as they accomplish nothing. I have also come to the conclusion that all of you are idiots for doing stuff like this and not doing what would have the most impact. Leading by example. You want to make tons of post about how this and that should go yet you have not shown you can even do it? Gtfo. The only person who is even halfway helping is FA and that's because he has shown what he can and is now showing how to do it.

Umad bro?
Enouragement is something i never get, when it comes to programming or designing my projects. Since i have no friends who know what programming involves, it would be hard for me to tell them about my projects, my ideas or giving suggestions.

That hits me hard when i try create something. I run out of ideas and got no one to ask. Sure i have people to talk or chat with, but i like to keep my projects in private untill they finaly are finished and can be released.

You have a good point in this post, but quite a few seems to be talking smack to others, only because they "think" the project will end in about a week, or that the creator seem to either be a complete dick, or a guy without potentials. something i find less incouraging.

Ya iMad. Seeing hypocrites QQ bothers me.

I'LL BE YOUR FRIEND TAFE :D
I was always Tafe's bitch. He just never aknowledged me.
Wait, who says that Lugia or LordAndrew aren't leading by example? They could be posting these articles _and_ making games.

Guess you'd best not look at a mirror then, eh?
woah... i was more talking about IRL dudz! XD

"but i like to keep my projects in private untill they finaly are finished and can be released." <= why i don't really ask alot on the internet :)

So not true ! X'D
I agree. One of the things that annoyed me on this site was the lack of feedback. A year ago I'd get like 1 or 2 comments when I post about games, and 30-40 comments when I make troll posts that have nothing to do with anything. I also don't really like people to tell me my work is awesome or good especially when I know it isn't. You can't improve from "that's awesome". You can only improve from criticism. Things like "that interface is terrible, it takes up too much space" or "that AI is probably the stupidest I've ever seen, it doesn't retreat when it's low on health" is what people need to hear.

Too bad you can't give people on this site criticism without them calling you a troll, or telling you you're dumb for not liking their game or "GFX". If you're dead honest with people, they whip out the ban so that the only people commenting on their blog are the people lying to their face telling them they don't need to improve. It's sad really.
I made a post that I just thought out and wrote quickly, I feel the same way as Lugia except mine was less organized than his post.

I think it's true that encouragement helps motivate the person. I'd like to be encouraged in future projects, so I shall do that for others.

Why? Is there a ghost in the mirror O__O

I honestly don't care how fed up people are with the community. Making retarded rant post and trying to pass it off as trying to help someone is not going to help the problem. Try leading by example.

As far as lack of feedback goes, have you tried advertising outside BYOND. I know it's a scary thought to venture outside BYOND but trust me you'll get better feedback from other sites than you will from Build Your Own Naruto Dream.
Who's building Naruto dreams? There are no Naruto dreams here. Shoot, all of my games to date are based off of chess except for this one ocean game. But you're right, I haven't created anything. I'mma failure. I'll never amount to the lord of content that you have made.

Wait a second... have you contributed anything? No games... no libraries... no resources of any kind.... You're sorta just sitting around aren't you? While I work on games/math libraries in my spare time, you sit around and complain about rips, saying "It's not worth making things for BYOND because they'll get ripped."

I'm not ranting, I'm suggesting that you give/receive encouragement and share ideas with others. At no point did I say only people on BYOND. Thing is, your game is going to be hosted on BYOND, so I suppose going to other BYONDlings is a good idea. But that doesn't mean you can't go beyond BYOND (pardon the pun). I went to show my Professor some stuff because I thought she'd find it interesting. I've had chats with my Physics Professor about how I'm going to design Siege (a board game that is just thoughts on paper right now!).

So chill, yo. I'm not attacking anyone. I'm just saying that encouragement in the development stages is pretty important because it gives a team something to keep going with fervor, rather than just keep going.
It's funny. Because I said is it worth making a BYOND game and that was over 5 months ago. Digging around for insults are we? I never said you haven't created anything now did I? Didn't think so. Have I contributed anything? Dunno, have I? You don't know. Because unlike most of BYOND I don't go parading around with blog post saying "IM NOW PART OF [enter game here] TEAM!"

And yes, I complain about rips. Why? Because it's a bigger issue than "[Enter person here] is not working how they should be so imma make a topic whining about it]" You're not giving encouragement, you're just ranting about it and trying to disguise as a helpful post.

Want to give encouragement? Show people how to gather a team, create a game, and promote it. Actions speak louder than words.
Ladies first. You're volunteering yourself right? Teach me, oh mighty one. For I am too noob. Clearly.

I have a team that I want. How did I find them? I played games and made friends. How to gather a team? I already covered that a while ago. I pointed out how to make a competent classified ad. Which is good enough for me. I already created a game and promoted it through a competition.

What are you trying to get at? I've already done everything you're complaining about.

Getting a team
Creating a game

Advertising? How hard is it to use pager? How hard is it to go to other game forums? How hard is it to use facebook? I'll give leeway here and there, but dang. Some things should be common sense!
Enzuigiri wrote:

That has already been done.
Is this where I come to argue?

That has already been done.

-> Make bad game
-> Send mass emails to game sites
-> 100 player boom
-> Act like a jackass
-> Game dies

Oh ok

I am no lady shim. You want me to do it? SURE! As soon as I resolve the current issue about rips ;) meanwhile why don't you get started on that. Oh and as far as those links go. You're an idiot for those. I said do it. Not link to some more of your "helping" topics. And I'm sure you get banned for mass page advertising now. Of course, that like rips is something they don't enforce.
Hey guis. Hey. It's a community. For games. Shit-filled fangames with no hope of getting more than 500 players, let alone become known outside of BYOND.

y must we argue wit eachot'r? y no fwiend?

But seriously. If you don't like the post, then why post here? Luigia obviously isn't going to change or accept your critism, so you're just wasting your time trying to show him what he is doing wrong. (If he even is doing anything wrong...)
