Why is it that there are so many blogposts showcasing a base but no actual content? Why is the base being made before the game? And why is every base naked? Shoot, at least put a shirt and some pants on that dude.

Traits you can find in almost every blogpost showcasing a base.

1. Naked - Junieprior says, "You start with nothing and earn your clothes." Therefore, you should start naked. I'm sure your parents made you walk around naked until you earned it. No wait, they dressed you in adorable little outfits!

But wait! Aren't ninjas in Naruto like 8 - 10 years old? In Bleach, Ichigo was at least a teenager. You don't walk around naked in daylight at that time (or maybe you do, certainly not in my part of the United States). Put some clothes on your bases mates. It looks so much more attractive.

2. Disproportionate - Every base has this obnoxiously sized head, forgiveable, really. But the shoulders extend way beyond the waist. I guess we're all G.I. Joes? Have you ever seen a life size G.I. Joe? They're the ugliest men in the world. And really, abs? Not every guy in anime has a 6-pack. What's more, they're ugly.

3. "So now that the base is done, let's get some work done."

Why must the base be completed in order to actually start the game? The base isn't really important to the game. Shoot, I'd play a stick figure game if it were a quality game! A good game with terrible graphics is better than a bad game with good graphics.

What is the deal with these games? Seriously. Maybe I'm biased because I'm no pixel artist, not an art major; but why is the imaging being done BEFORE THE GAME ITSELF?! It's like those people who create websites before their game is complete. It doesn't make your game better.
I am guessing that completing a base is a huge accomplishment for them.
If you're not going realistic, then at least your head should be bigger than the rest of your body.
The base isn't really important to the game.

Without the base who'l be your character a cheese ?!

Without a game, then what's the base for?

I laugh at his trolling attempts.
A base is fairly important in a game that uses overlays..

Besides this is the BYOND blogs section, you didn't really expect anything better when you clicked on it.

I believe that's the problem. People place such an importance on creating and perfecting a base so early in development that the game tends to never reach a playable state.
People see others posting about their "base" so they think that's what you're supposed to do. BYOND game developers focus on graphics because it's a lot easier to make graphics than it is to make a game. They can make a few icons and feel like the game is 10-20% complete. By the time they make a map, add GM commands, and find a host the game is about 60% complete. Then they can scrap the project for some silly reason and convince people they had basically made a hit game without doing any game development.

This isn't new and these people can't really be helped. All we can do is ignore them.
BYONB ( Build Your Own Naruto Base )
"What are you talking about? All a game really needs is a title screen, a base, GM commands, and a host. What's this 'gameplay' thing you're talking about?" -- A real thing that the majority of BYOND believes.
The problem isn't that people believe that creating a base icon is a significant accomplishment. These people think they understand game development but they don't - they can't be helped until they realize they don't understand how game development works.

The real problem is that the helpless people influence the opinions of better game developers. If people believe that the base icon is 10% of the game, other developers are less likely to honestly assess the insignificance of the base icon. People are less likely to realize that the base icon is just one mob icon (NPCs, enemies, etc.), which is just one category of icons (turfs, objects, effects, etc.), which is just one category of graphics for a game (images, backgrounds, banners, etc.), and that graphics are just a small part of the game to begin with (code, maps, gameplay, interface, etc.). An honest assessment would put the base icon as being about 0.0001% of a game.

Instead, people use that 10% as a starting point for estimating its significance - they correctly realize the base icon is less significant than that but they just whittle that 10% down a little and place its importance in the 1 to 0.1% range. These people understand that the base icon isn't important but they're still overestimating its importance because they're influenced by the opinions of the totally clueless developers.

Personally, I usually work on graphics as I work on actual gameplay elements.

It helps keep me motivated by having being able to visually see progress.

I think what they really want is attention and perhaps criticism, though it's unfortunate that they appear on a page where many who aren't interested are forced to skip over these topics. New Byond Blog/Forum system ftw!?

Look, I'm sorry but this article appears to be pure and undeniable hate. People are creating things and having fun doing it. They aren't trying to be the greatest game designers in history. We are a small community and as such things tend to happen slowly or fizzle out. Deal with it because we all seem to be having fun with how things are going.

Real mature.

That's the problem. You have too much fun drawing bases and modifying your CSS, and there isn't enough actual game development. BYOND has been taken over by 12 year olds that know nothing - that's why when you go to other sites like GameDev.net, you don't see people bragging about their new blog layout, or the base they were working on. Because those sites aren't infested with dyslexic children with anime obsessions.

Compare these developer blogs to ours and you tell me which one looks like an actual game development community.

So you want to be poor and still live with your parents? And also rely on money gained from subscribers?
