I'm tired of all of the cookie cutter rpgs. I want to play something new and vaguely interesting. Sadly, I did not receive a beta key to TES Online. So now I look to you folk. No anime games, por favor. Fire away.

P.S. For the LoL players out there, I've started a revolution in Valoran. Link
Baiten Kaitos: Lost Wings and the Eternal Ocean, for the gamecube. JRPG, excellent battle system, beautiful backgrounds. Interesting plot twists, although sometimes the story doesn't make a great deal of sense and dear god the voice acting is awful.

You mentioned TES Online, so Morrowind, if you haven't played it. It's not as combat-focussed as Oblivion and Skyrim, and the combat is much more dicerolly and much less based around direct player execution, but the story and the world are masterful. If you do play morrowind, get the unofficial patch and the code patch

If you like ye-olde dungeon-crawler 'rpgs' based on dicerolling, character and inventory management, you may like the Might and Magic series. Not Heroes of Might and Magic, just Might and Magic. Specifically MM6 and MM7 are the best. MM8 is playable. Everything after that is awful. MM5 and below are rather old and show it, unfortunately. this guy has a patch that fixes some bugs and adds some useful features like mouselook. In a similar vein, Legend of Grimrock.

Castle of the Winds is a classic roguelike, now available for free. Doesn't run on windows 7 though.

Mount&Blade: Warband has some excellent real-time combat mechanics focussing on player skill and realism, and some excellent mods.

The modern remakes of the King's Bounty series are quite playable, too, although a bit grindy.
Dragon Warrior III for the gameboy color. A classic, and well worth 300 hours of your time.
Im playing FFXIV ARR beta right now. Its not innovative an d ground breaking, but if you liked ff11 like I do this game is a bunch of fun.
I pretty much didn't like any FF after FF6, tbh.

I was excited about this game but every video looks the same. Just a bunch of people standing in one spot hitting hotkeys. At least WoW had fights where you had to move around and hit hotkeys. It appears in FFXIV most of the fights just consist of you standing in one spot the entire time mashing your rotation. If they don't want people moving around, why not return to FF's roots and just make a turn-based MMORPG?

There is a bit of moving around actually. Some enemies have AOE moves that you have to dodge, and dungeon bosses have things to manage during the fight like sealing grates so more enemies dont spawn. But at its core it is another mmo that you go through your rotations on. Like I said its not groundbreaking but its a solid MMO that will probably keep me playing for around 3 months, maybe longer with content patches and crafting.
keep me playing for around 3 months

Five year development window for three months of gameplay. It's so sad that the MMO format seems tapped out these days.

I would agree that, to me, the general quality of overall game design has steadily declined since then. Plots are ludicrous, characters are forgettable with little-to-no development, and gameplay has not really improved. I did enjoy FFX and FFXII a whole lot. I kind of lost all faith in Squenix recently though. Unfortunately, this seems to be a trend with a lot of my childhood favorites as of late.

I spend most of my time these days playing old, obscure RPGs on emulators. I've loved the Ys series lately. If you've never gotten into Ys, I highly suggest you try. It's an action RPG series worth checking out, with four games on Steam. Or, if you want any obscure SNES JRPGs, give me a call.

True, but that's how themepark MMOs usually go for me. A sandbox like archeage will probably keep me occupied much longer, that's probably my most anticipated MMORPG right now.

I think it's a matter of the technology changing that's made for the state we're in with RPGs.

3D engines require so much time and energy to develop and 3D models so much longer to make than 2D sprites, that there is much less ability for people to perfect them.

I think the expansion of the player's viewport into a 3D view makes for the inability to control the player's experience, compared to a 2D game, and the control of the player's experience as well as time spent tweaking and polishing a game is all but impossible to get to the same level as a 2D title.

When you spend 80% of your development budget working on the art pipeline and software, it leaves little room for a decent storyline and character development.
I dunno. Some of the best looking modern titles have had just as much thought put into the story and character development (but those are also the games lacking in gameplay elements.) I think it's a poor excuse, especially when you have as many resources as companies like Square Enix. Final Fantasy 13 clearly had a lot of thought put into the story and character development, they just did a terrible job at it.

Another Bahamut Lagoon fan? :D
I love that game.
To an extent, I wonder if it's just that you are a more discerning consumer, now, of course. Age always adds a fair bit to your critical reception, and games of your younger years benefit from a more accepting and imaginative you to bring a story to life, mentally.
Banjo Kazooki.
Actually get Crusader Kings II or Mount & Blade: Warband by Paradox Games, or just pick up the old XCOMs, XCOM: UFO Defense or XCOM: Apocalypse.
