What is FreeAllegiance?
- FreeAllegiance (Allegiance or "Alleg" for short) is a space Real-Time Strategy game. There are several game modes available. I'll briefly run over the popular game modes later. In Allegiance, up to 6 teams (usually there's 2 teams, but there can be 1 team if you want to play by yourself) duke it out on a huge map for space supremacy. Allegiance isn't lacking in variety either. There are several factions available play, with each faction having their own strengths and weaknesses. A faction is kind of like a "guild" you sign up for at the start of the game. It affects your appearance, starting ships, starting money, purchasable tech, etc...

You fly in a fully 3D environment in space (well, not really since there's drag in this space). This takes some getting used to, but you'll be prepared when we finally get flying cars. This is *NOT* a browser game as I may have been alluding to. You will have to download the game (The setup link is on the site, and I'll post it later). The overall size of the game is 1.21 GB.

How Do I Play?
- You fly your ship using the mouse and keyboard or a joystick. There is also a series of tutorial missions that you can access (even while offline) if you want to learn how to play.

Now, I've mentioned purchasing tech and whatnot in this game. But you don't have to worry about that if you're worried about it. The teams all have a specific person dedicated to the job of purchasing all team investments called the Commander. You will want to be a regular pilot and just do what they need you to do.

Game Modes
For the ease of explanation, I will explain these in terms of 2 teams, but as stated before, there can be up to 6 teams.

-- Conquest: If you play Allegiance, odds are this is the mode you are most familiar with. In this mode, both teams are placed on opposite sides of a map and the objective is to destroy all of the opposing team's techbases. Your team expands their map control by sending constructors to asteroids, at which they will build Light Bases, Bases, or Techbases. After establishing a techbase, your team may purchases tech upgrades. You destroy bases with Anti-Base weaponry, which may only be equipped by certain ships (Bombers, Capital Ships). An alternative to destroying bases is to capture them, which makes them usable by your team. This is done using troop transports. You fund your exploits with money brought in by miners. Miners are absolutely crucial to winning the game. You have no miners, your team will only get $400 - $600 a minute. This is not good. So a lot of time is invested into destroying other team miners and defending your own.

If you decide to join up, this is the mode we will focus on.

-- DeathMatch: In this mode, 2 or more teams have a base to launch from and upgraded ships to fly in. All you do is shoot down enemy pilots and the first team to a specific kill count wins. This is good for warming up your pilot skills before games.

-- Capture the Flag: This is pretty much well understood by most online gamers. There's a flag, you gotta steal the enemy flag and return it to your base while defending your own flag.

Is this Game Hard?

God yes. You wanna know why I think we don't have flying cars yet? People have a hard enough time avoiding accidents while sober in 2D. Add another coordinate AND worry about drunk drivers? Flying in 3D is really hard, learning to lead your gunshots is hard. This game has a steep learning curve. Which is why I'm trying to talk the game up before you even download.

Will I Enjoy this Game?

You either hate it or you love it. It has a unique charm in its complexity. You can learn to like it. But I will tell you this, odds are when you start, you'll dislike it. But we all dislike things we're not good at, right? So if you chug through it for like a month, and you still don't like it, you probably don't like it. That's okay.

Still a thing.
My little brother played this game a bunch, I tried it out and I liked it but never got really into it. But, it did seem to satisfy my lingering hunger for a game like Freespace. Maybe I should just play that again...
