I looked up your MacBook model--I mean no disrespect but your stepfather is plainly wrong.

You may be able to get away with an external GPU through the Thunderbolt cable port on your Mac, but it would have to be supported by the software you are using:
Parallels, or
Wine, or
Winebottler, or
PlayOnMac


Undoubtedly, Parallels with support an eGPU but you'd be only finding a headache if you did not host a Windows machine directly. I repeat to you, your computer lacks the power to robustly run Wine in a virtualized environment.

Your only options look like Windows in a VM, or Wine (or its derivatives) directly on MacOS.
Even still, those two solutions are not promising because your processor is weak.
