Hmmm, as I sat here thinking about what has happened around the site the past few days, and in effect another look at the code of conduct (which link I cannot find as of this moment..), I began to think of how would this apply to say "blood and gore" in Byond games. Of course the site is meant to be "kid friendly" so to speak but the line becomes somewhat blurred when it comes to how far this could be taken.

As far as I know, no game on byond has been removed from hubs (yet!) due to excessive violence and/or gore yet, as opposed to that Hentai game we all know about (Then again, I don't know the whereabouts of that game that either had black people killing the KKK or vice versa neither, wasn't it called blackworld or something?...)

Anyways, as any seasoned gamer would know, even in the year 2010, the original Mortal Kombat for instance is still rated M for mature which arguably contains a lot less blood & gore than Dead Space in comparison. Maybe the ESRB is too lazy to adjust the rating?

With this said, I kinda notice bias(noes!) towards nudity versus blood (pretty much globally), but understandably, one can be more "creative" with blood than nudity and it's much easier to chalk it up to mindless time wasting. Unless you're pretty highly conservative, 2D blood/violence isn't usually seen as much of a threat to the impressionable youth nowadays though.

Back to the question at hand, do you think it's possible that something on Byond could be made so bloody/gory or in some kind of way offensive based on 2D graphics alone? I know no action has been taken against my game Splatter which purpose is purely mindless entertainment, but it's more likely that isn't the case because A) my artistic ability sucks and/or B) my game is hardly played enough to even be noticed (here's a screeny so you don't have to play it, although there are accompanying death sounds). While I (highly) appreciate that Byond allows blood & such in games (creative freedom is awesome), I wonder could there ever be a point attained where there is just too much to reflect well on the image of Byond. If not, someone should go make a graphically gorgeous, ridiculously bloody, yet fun game pronto...

P.S. I fully intend on using blood and whatnot in my projects (for the hell of it!) but as always, my mind began to wonder so I just had to pose the question to the masses. :D

Someone is making a Gantz game. If it lives up to the Anime, we may get to find out.
A rating is based on more than blood and gore. If my memory serves, mortal kombat has some pretty crude comments, as well as some partial nudity (I might be making that one up; correct me if I'm wrong).
There's no possible way for a BYOND game to have sex or nudity without looking absolutely ridiculous.

Hmm, the first mortal kombat? I can only recall "crude" comments such as finish him or fatality at the most, which isn't nearly offensive at all :p..And considering there was only one female character in the original (Sonya), I'm pretty doubtful that a two piece costume and/or shirtless men count as partial nudity unless they were more strict than I remember in the 90's. Hell, even a old Jurassic Park game I had on sega saturn was rated M and it was mostly dinosaurs eating other dinosaurs, though there were instances in which you could "eat" humans...

Cutscene, someone's taking a shower. Put's on some clothes.

Modern games can barely pull this off, what makes you think a 2D game written by some kid in high school would do any better?
I don't have any authority over the hub, but I think any censorship would involve simply not listing the game in official channels. Finding and eliminating hub entries just isn't worth the time of volunteers.

That said, I don't think a little (or a lot of) blood is enough to get up in arms about. Frankly, I'd be thrilled if there were artists both capable and willing to produce enough work that's disgustingly gory for a game. That takes a knowledge of anatomy that most developers can't afford.
That's not exactly "blood and gore" like I was expecting.

Anyway, I'd say as long as you keep the "blood and gore" off of the hubs and give a warning it'd be fine.

There are other games on BYOND with worse blood and gore than in that screenshot, and they have had no problems about it.

Why wasn't you expecting that? I said my graphical ability sucks, in bold... XD But like ACWraith said, I'd be very thrilled also as noted near the end of the blogpost.
"(Then again, I don't know the whereabouts of that game that either had black people killing the KKK or vice versa neither, wasn't it called blackworld or something?...)"

White World, the idea of a black guy killing KKK members was too much for some people to handle. So, I took it down until I can rework it into a real game with a different theme. I never received any warning from BYOND staff, no guilds would take it though. =(
