Well, I've already implemented this myself in a project that may take years to see the light of day, due to the lack of quality art(or art in general).

The idea here is to make a mob that scales with the player's level. Now this came about as a idea for my party and quest system(JRPG, surprised?). How I've implemented it is to prevent players of a higher level from coming in and pushing through the boss battles(which would presumably be in a generated room, like DCUO, if you've played that) for the lower-level players. When the higher-level player attacks the mob, it automatically scales it's own level and stats up to that player's level. Of course, it's simple to offset the balance(say you want it to be -2 or +5 in relation to the enemy mob's level). SO, with reflection on my system, I think it works really well. I've tested it many times and seems to work perfectly.

Now then, why isn't this a more common practice? I often see BYOND games with some form of a party system in place, scaling enemies isn't a new idea, and it fits perfectly with most, if not all, party systems. Even if you just scale the mobs pre-combat, when the party enters the area.

What does it mean to critique?

Well, due to recent events, I have been reminded of the many post where the original poster gets offended and feels insulted due to what others would call a critique.

I personally feel anything negative that isn't sugar-coated can easily be mistaken, generally by someone whom may not be able to emotionally detach themselves from something of theirs, as a insult.

I would give examples, but I fear that would be a little much, not to mention the moderators would likely feel the same.

So, I've made this topic to gain public input from the BYOND community on what the line between insult and critique is, how each should be handled, and at what point do you present yourself, your work, or your ideas to be judged in a public forum?

On an side discussion, brought about by the same recent events, when is it that comparison crosses the line of insult?

Please refrain from posting examples or bleeding from other topics to which anything relevant may cause in derailing and/or arguments on the topic. I would like to avoid moderation on this topic as much as possible.

I see this guy on BYOND Help a LOT, how isn't he a BYOND Moderator yet? He's seemingly extremely professional and very helpful amongst the community. I don't mean to start up a rant about any current members of the moderation team or anything of the like. Forgive if the following is taken in a negetive manner; I have seen him do more than most of the moderators of present and seems less moody then most of them too- not to say that any of them are bad in these aspects. I'm sure every member of the moderation team and staff have seen him, so I'm curious as to a reasoning behind him being left out. Is it a personal choice by him? No need for details to this at all, just curious.

Also, if this is deemed inappropriate for the forums, feel free to remove it. I could always ask him directly, though I'd seriously like feedback from current moderators.

Incase you missed the reasoning behind this post; I find it odd that it shows the hours remaining on your membership in that area when you have so many days remaining; I think it's needless to show the hours remaining until they are coming into their last month or so.
I'm unsure of wether or not this is the correct placement for this topic, though I suppose it could be moved at a later time.

I have recently been fiddling with text and list a lot, for a project I've slowly been developing alone.

As you can see, I ran two seperate test on these; seeing how much cpu was use uppon 100 thousand runs and 1 million runs simultaneously.

I'm quite pleased with these results, uppon my first test it resulted in almost 9 total cpu used for the Reverse() proc(per 100 thousand calls). I went ahead and re-wrote the proc and retested to a very pleasing drop in the cpu usage.

The above of the proc codes I used for these test.
Below is the test I used.

mob
verb
ListPreformanceTest()
var/list/L=list("What","You","Say","ToMe","kk")
var/i=100000//altered this to 1mil for other test.
while(i)
i--
text2list(Reverse(list2text(Reverse_List(L))))

I included 5 text entries into a list, equaling to 16 total characters.

I would like to have input from other programmers to help me correct anything that'd allow for better preformance without taking away functionality.

I would also like others to attempt their own test and share with me their results, so that I can see how it effects others.
