For the horizontal acceleration you could do what pilotwings does with the jetpack and allow him to aim the jets somehow.

It's hard to tell what the physics are actually doing. It looks like the circle just speeds up and slows down gradually. Using a library it'd take about 60 seconds to make this 50 second video.

It annoys me that it fails to preserve horizontal momentum.

@Popisfizzy: It does, it's just considerably quicker to decelerate than the vertical preservation. They're two separate things. (:
This is definitely not the finalized version, the one I have right now performs much different than this one. Less jerky acceleration and more preservation of momentum. | |
