Guild Updates

It's been quite a while since we had a update post about the guild, eh? There's a lot to talk about so here we go.

- First things first, I'd like to bid Monkey a nice big guild (and BYOND for that matter) farewell . We lost a comrade who did a many great things for our most glorious guild. You shall not be forgotten Monkey!

- The second topic for tonight's update is whether or not the guild should keep focusing exclusively on pixel art. We've come to the realization that many people on BYOND use art for their games that isn't pixel art such as Foomer, and we've been thinking about turning the guild into BYOND ART GUILD, or something like that. We've discussed this quite a bit privately in the guild, and I'm now opening the discussion up to the general BYOND public. So tell us what your views are on this.

- There are still some guild contests and collaborations still going on if anyone is interested.
1)Xooxer's bastardly old Operation Collaboration Come on guys it's almost done!
2)Nidaime Hokage's Pixel Brawl Contest
3)The Guild's Turf Set Project Isn't dead yet. It's pretty much ready to roll, though I don't know if anyone is still interested in it. If anyone wants to jump start the project the relevant posts are here and here

- We now have a link to the guild somewhere on the BYOND site! Just look on the right side bar of Dream Makers for the guild link. Alas it isn't much, but people should be able to easily find us now.

- Posting in classified ads section of the guild. Come on guys! Follow the guidelines for posting there. We don't want it ending up like the official BYOND classified ads section, now do we? While I'm at here's the link to the guild rules and guidelines as well.

- We have a sister guild, Audiophiles! If anyone here is interested in the art of music and sound head on over to Audiophiles, and embrace the melodic sounds of mod tracking!

Well that's it for now. I have some ideas and changes in store for the guild in due time (after I discuss them with good ol' Flick), as well as the matter of possibly hiring a new mod to help keep the guild in working order.

Pixel Art is mulling over a new collaboration. We're gonna try and create turf tilesets for a number of useful settings. Hopefully, artists can challenge themselves to make great tiles and developers can get some quality turf icons to quickly build games.

We're narrowing some of the ideas and styles down with some great input from both artists and developers, but we need more input!

If you're an artist who wants to contribute or a developer who'd be interested in free turf icon resources, help BYOND out and give some answers and suggestions:

Let thar be a challenge! A challenge for December

It's time to set in motion the challenge for this month, and not two and half weeks late either!

This month's challenge is the One Bit Challenge. The pallet consists of black, and white. Nothing more, and nothing less. It's up to you how well you utilize these two colors. Will you just do line art (which I guess I advise against doing), or will you go the full way through and try to add form and figure to your piece?

I'm going to be pretty lax on the guidelines for this:

Theme: Must have something to do with the Winter

Size: No smaller than 32x32

Colors: Zero, black and white only

Can be an animation if you so choose

Ending date: December 31st 11:59 (what ever your own time zone is)

Also almost forgot: Don't cheat and use Bakasensei's Converter, or any converter for that matter. It's kind of lame, and defeats the whole purpose of the challenge, but I trust you guys so... :P

November Monthly Challenge Recap

November Monthly Challenge

Sorry guys about not getting a challenge up earlier, some stuff came up that first weekend and I forgot about it. However Iain was nice enough to start a nifty challenge up for this month.

--The guidelines to the challenge--
We're already half way through the month of November, so I'd like to suggest an easy but rewarding challenge. Some of my favorite pixel art when I was growing up came from Phantasy Star III, particularly the menu portraits. My challenge would be to pixel a portrait using the limitations of that game:

Canvas Size: 64x64px
Palette Size: 12 colors
Background: Solid color, no scenery.

End Date: Friday, November 30th. 11:59 est

October Monthly Challenge recap

I was going to make this post last night, but I was too tired to do so, but anyways.

The monthly challenge ended last night, and I think we had a great turn out with lots of great pieces that people did. I'd like to thank everyone that participated. You're the best!

Though it seems like some people never got around to finishing, but that's alright.

SO- Let's get started! For the first-monthly challenge, for the month of October, we're going to do a Holloweeny themed challenge that focuses on creativity and shading/lighting. What is it, you ask, exactly? Well everyone is to create a dark-spooky Halloween night scene, with a Jack-o-lantern glowing in the image. The Pumpkin can be any size, shape, and location in the image; it just has to be visible somewhere with a glowing face. Try to be as creative as possible, and experiment with shadows!

Remember this is a challenge, not a contest, it's meant to be fun, and help everyone with his or her pixel art, and I hope everyone enters, pixel artist or not.

There will be some restrictions, otherwise there's no point in it being a challenge~

-200x150 pixels (it can be either landscape or Portrait)
-32-color limit max (not including transparencies)
-Must include a carved-out glowing pumpkin somewhere in the image
-Have fun while doing it.

The end date for the challenge is 9pm EST

We haven't really done much in way of challenges and contests, so I figured why not start up some new ones? The idea of challenges is a great one, and they're meant to be fun, and to help improve your skills at pixel art.
