I find that I'm frustrated with the new site design because I have no central place to see what's going on. Besides that, it seems like the site just died in terms of activity but maybe everyone is hiding somewhere that I haven't stumbled across yet. What am I missing?
You aren't missing a thing what you see is what you get.

No Easter eggs here pal.
If you're looking for activity. Go to BYOND games, click most players and on the right it should have a tag called Anime. Click that and there is where all the players are at.
The central place is now the BYOND forums. All game/community/developer activity is routed through them, so it's a good place to watch.

While the forums is a good place to watch, it is crammed and somewhat hard to navigate through when trying to find certain updates on games etc.

If you want to see what's going on, go to your updates page. It'll show you activity in posts you're following, posts made by users you're a fan of, and posts made on hub entries you're a fan of (and some other things, like pager messages). This lets you turn the "your updates" page into something like the old members front page, but with content that only relates to things you care about. While this is theoretically an improvement I don't think people use it effectively.
