Well, I'm in dispair. I can't even spell correctly. I never could.

Today my laptop got a virus called winlose.exe
It hooks itself up to system32 closer than a geek to a hooker, it opens hundreds of the system proccess svchost, so many it drains your cpu to 100%.
The only fix for this is to edit the system registry, but even then its risky. This virus is so secretive that it's almost impossible to find, there are hundreds of possible files it could be, but I went forthe commonly known ones, And got it wrong.

Whenever I log in windows tells me that My OS isn't regestered, then boots me off before I can do anything, the BIOS screens don't offer any help, then only option.... Format

Everything I have is now gone, everything I had.

I'm quite upset at this moment. Good years of DM lost in minuets. I'm watching my laptops Format progress, Just as I say this The program folder byond was deleted. Irony?

Very sad day for me. Very sad indeed.
Might as well delete all your games hubs now.

True. =(
No more castle updates....
For about $20 or less you could've put your hard drive in an external USB enclosure, hooked it up to a different computer, copy what you needed, and then formatted, but eh, to each his own.
There's about a million ways you could have recovered your files (hooking it up to another PC as a Secondary Drive, LiveCD, etc.)

Suppose that doesn't matter anymore though...
Panic causes idiotic moves.

No.

No, there was no way to do this, the BOOTMGR failed.
as a final act of hate the virus stuck, meaning after the wipe it still survived, how? I don't know/give a flying fuck.

Instead I've installed CentOS (Linux basicly)
This is my first dip into linux based, I hope it's not going to be a very long one :P
Whether your care or not, it could be that the virus worked its way into your computer's BIOS. According to what I've read, the best protection from viruses of this type (assuming you get rid of the one you have first) is simply to have set a BIOS password.

You might try clearing the CMOS/removing the BIOS battery, but if you're good with another OS then I wouldn't recommend fiddling with it unless you've got a spare motherboard or funds for one somewhere.

As the name implies, BOOTMGR is for booting. You likely could have read from the disk without problem if you mounted it as a secondary.
I currently have about 110 Gigs of documents, files etc. backed up on my ipod. I'm fairly sure that windows Vista, despite it's flaws, will back up your personal documents when you reformat in a windows.old folder.
Nope, all gone.

@ people saying I could of gotten my stuff,
I tryed. I used USB, Disc's. I googled like mad, everything suggested failed.
I was actually at an IT company at the time, so I had PLENTY of resources. Nothing worked.

The BOOTMGR is the very first thing to run, if that fails, the BIOS screen won't even show.
The BOOTMGR = level 1 priority
the only thing that is above them are inistal startup/shutdown systems, and OS level discs.

Not always true. With Vista's SPK1, there are only two ways to reformat. One way deletes everything, the other just deletes YOUR personal files.
My one condolence, was that within a few months I was going to wipe the harddrive anyway, When I got my New Alienware laptop... right after I transfered all the info onto the Alienware... =(
Host Proccesses are a problem, aren't they? ;D

You are completely wrong and obviously have no concept of how computers work. BOOTMGR is a part of Vista, a part of the operating system, which loads up after the BIOS and is completley unrelated to a slave mounting.
Rushnut: Airjoe is right. It doesn't matter how unbootable your harddrive is if you're running it as a slave drive. Please stop talking like you know what you're talking about when it's painfully clear you don't.
