NEStalgia: Loot Hunt
Ever since the original Diablo I've been a huge loot hunt fanatic. There is just nothing cooler in an online RPG than the feeling of finding a rare or unique item and then being able to use or to trade that item to other players. Even though the loot hunt is a concept from modern RPGs, it fits incredibly well into NEStalgia's 8-bit console RPG formula.
Loot drops in NEStalgia are pretty straight forward. At the end of every battle there is a chance that the enemies will drop a chest. If you're in a party with other players, the chance for a chest to drop is calculated separately for each player. Therefore, the odds of finding loot do not change based upon the size of your party. The probability of every drop obviously varies, but chests can contain the following types of items:
The pool of items that can drop is based upon the larger area that you're in. For example, the overworld map surrounding a particular town and all of the dungeons etc. linked to that town are usually considered an 'area'.
You can also find loot in chests hidden all over the world, although the contents aren't random. That's not to say that there aren't useful items in chests - particularly those located in secret passages.
One of the types of special usable items that will drop in battle are dyes, which can be used once to recolor your character sprite. Dyes contain colors and color combinations that are unique in that they aren't available to choose from during the character creation process. If you want a very distinct looking character, you'll be wanting to get your hands on dyes.
Unique weapons and armor are very powerful. Get lucky enough to find a unique item and you likely won't need to replace it with another piece of gear for 7-10 levels. Furthermore, some unique gear has special powers when used in the overworld or battles. As pictured here, the "Fiery Orb of the Phoenix" allows Conjurers to cast the spell "Redeem" in battle (a 50% chance revive spell).
There is actually a bit more ground to cover - particularly how boss loot drops function in the 'end game' dungeon for each content patch... but I'll likely explain all of that post-release. It won't be long now ;)

- Normal Items - Basic items, weapons and armor that you can also purchase from NPC Mercants in the area
- Random Weapons/Armor - Weapons and armor similar to what can be purchased from NPC Merchants in the area, but with random stat modifiers applied to them (Strength, Intelligence, etc.)
- Special Items - Interesting and unique usable items that can't be bought or found anywhere else
- Unique Weapons/Armor - Named, unique weapons and armor that are incredibly powerful (predetermined stats) and sometimes bestow special abilities

It varies, but right now my focus is on feature films. At the moment I'm writing a dark comedy, and a kid's movie (computer animated). Writing the animated movies is really interesting, because watching the animators draw what was in your imagination and make it come to life is just beyond cool.

I'm thinking when this game is out, will I play WoW more, or this. But I know for sure i'll be playing both.
Off Topic:
Blegh, the last thing i've ever written was a Death Note spin off thing for my English class 4 years ago.
I know this isn't the place for it, but how goes your screenplay writing? write anything interesting? what type of things do you write?

I've definitely neglected my YouTube channel for way too long. Right now most of my time is devoted to my career (writing screenplays), and I've had a hard time working up the motivation to write and shoot any web shorts. Hopefully I'll get my YouTube "mojo" back soon.

I'm glad to hear it - BYOND needs all of the original games it can get.

Thanks, I appreciate it!
Not all of the credit is mine, as this is truly a team project. The testers have done an amazing job helping to refine the game with their insightful feedback, and tenkuu continues to do a ton of the "behind the scenes" coding work.

However, we can't determine that for sure. You're more than likely just saying this to save face.

If someone told you that they didn't understand why you gave up developing Raegon just to develop a game that was very similar only more archaic and less appealing, I'm pretty sure that you wouldn't be flattered. In fact, I'd bet that you'd respond exactly the same way I did.

correctamundo, and i already edited that second comment to point out that the analogy was bad

Well let me just apologize for taking your statement: "seeing NEStalgia updates for me is like being a fat kid in a candy store except all the candy has poop in the center" and not realizing that it was a glowing compliment. Seriously?
You're either back pedaling on what you said, or you did a piss-poor job of conveying what you meant. It's not out of line for me to call you on it.

i'm not sure if you grasped it, but my comment implied that i was already fully aware of your reasonings behind the decision and that i was still disconcerted over it regardless
> Calling NEStalgia 'archaic' by comparison isn't correct. Just because you yourself prefer the action oriented gameplay of AA, it doesn't mean that there aren't plenty of people out there who enjoy this more strategic turn-based approach just as much. I happen to be one of them.
i never said otherwise; i agree that it is just my opinion, and i'm simply expressing my regret that your interests don't fit mine

... i was complimenting your game. my analogy wasn't very good ("the center being butterscotch and me being allergic to it" would have been better), so here's a simple version: your game is very high quality and polished, which gives it a lot of appeal, however the gameplay doesn't suit my personal preferences, which makes me sad.
> Frankly, this type of comment begs the question: what the heck are people like you sitting around BYOND doing? You're not developing games. You're not playing them. Is your entire purpose on BYOND to take pot shots at anyone who has the talent and motivation to actually do something?
sorry, but i have developed games in the past and i am currently developing a game; your ignorance towards the former and my decision to hold off on discussing the latter don't make them any less true.
in addition, i do play games on BYOND-- you know, like the 100+ hours (probably a lot more) i've spent on YOUR game, Proelium? the one i bought a lifetime subscription for?

I second all of the above.

I already went over this.
Calling NEStalgia 'archaic' by comparison isn't correct. Just because you yourself prefer the action oriented gameplay of AA, it doesn't mean that there aren't plenty of people out there who enjoy this more strategic turn-based approach just as much. I happen to be one of them.

It's one thing not to be interested in NEStalgia. It's another thing entirely to sit there and criticize me for developing it.
