Taking some time to research, I found that, the Bible records incidents of three different types of "giants" or men of extraordinary size. these where the Rephaim, Anok, and Nephilim.

We all know the story of David and Goliath?(1Sa 17:4-7) Goliath was over 9 ft 5 inches tall. The head of his spear weighed 15 lbs (6.8 kg), and his scaled chain mail weighted at 125 lbs (57 kg)!

Goliath, however, was a title and not a name, these mercenaries of war where part of the Rephaim. More accounts of different Rephaim appear in the bible. There was Og, King of Bashan. Ishbi-benob (2Sa 21:16); Saph, or Sippai (2Sa 21:18; 1Ch 20:4); Lahmi, Goliath’s brother(1Ch 20:5); and a man of extraordinary size whose fingers and toes were in sixes, totaling 24 (2Sa 21:20).

The Anok where an even bigger mystery. The Israelite sent out spies into the territory of the Anok, these spies came back appalled and frighten from what they have seen. They reported they felt like grasshoppers among men of extraordinary size, and believed they where Nephilim.(Nu 13:33)

The real Nephilim, however, where already long gone (Ge 6:4). These guys where even scarier. They where a the offspring of materialized angels, and Human women. Any idea how power a single angel can be? There's story that tells of one angel that killed 185,000 of the Assyrian army in one night! (2Ki 19:35) The Nephilim appear in all sort of mythology around world. From the Mayas, to the greek. Those guys are really bad arse.

Whether you believe in the bible or not, it's easy to admire the awesome stories it contains. Reading about these giants of old have definitely inspired some character creations on my end.

Information on Price and Estimates

If you are not willing to spend money to attain original graphical assets for your game, do not continue reading. Prices can be a very tricky and sometimes scary to work with. It's impossible to know precisely how long things will take. My goal is always to find a fair price. Fair prices are always a win/win situation.

Style has a VERY drastic affect on prices. I personally love making very detailed work, unfortunately this requires a lot of time, and thus cost more. I can, however, make the simple, good looking, stylistic, and cheap artwork. It all depends on how much you want to spend.

Every aspect of game art can be styled in a way to tailor a budget. Whether it be simplifying color counts, working with less frames of animation, or recycling artwork. This does not mean you can expect paying close to nothing or half-ass on the budget.

For example, graphics that look like Pokemon Gold/Silver can be done very quickly, and cheaply. As opposed to something from Tales of Phantasia that would take a lot longer.

Generally, unique 32x32 spaces of pixel art can vary from 1$ a piece, to 5$ a piece. This includes sprites and animations. This is because my hourly rate is 20$ per hour, and the style changes how many I can create per hour.

The general rule is, when the dimensions double, the prices quadruple. This is because even tough 64x64 is only twice the resolution of 32x32, they take 4 times as much work.

Average rates for tiles and sprites:

32x32 area, 2-3$
64x64 area, 8-12$
128x128 area, 32-48$
256x256 area, 128-192$
512x512 area, 512$-768$
(Unique tiles)

Tittle screens and portraits take a little extra work, meaning it takes more time, and time is money. 64x64 portrait, 20-40$.

How much should I be looking to spend to make a BYOND game? When you stop referring to BYOND as some type of subculture where poor games are okay, the better off you'll be. Small game projects like RPGS or Zelda type games can be covered by as little as 300$. Of course, this means the amount of content will be minimal or very styled as I already explained.

Projects that are willing to spend at least 150$ will be given free complementary concept art as part of the development process.

BYOND is filled with Hobbyist developers who frankly aren't willing to spend much of their personal means. My advice? Look for public domain art in site such as OpenGameart.org

Greetings,

I'm well on my way to expand my marketable skills and branch out into actual game design. To do this, I would need to learn how to research trends, make successful ideas that would sell, and compile game designs.

BYOND will be my personal pool to get my feet wet. Note, that I might actually be making games smaller games on BYOND as a sort of field exercises.

All comments are welcome, I would love to hear about some of your favorite games in the past, favorite BYOND games, or Other game. Comment also if you're willing to help me out on any future projects here on BYOND.

Thanks All
