It's too late to do much about GSD now. One day to finish the game is not long enough (technically it is playable, there is just next to nothing to do).

So I am remaking a past game I made. War of Heroes to be specific.
I have never been too fond of making lengthy projects, and like PVPVPVPVP, so this sort of game is perfect for me to work on.

I am making significant changes, and improvements to it however.

Firstly, I am making graphics for it, so they will suck. But they will at least look COLORFUL and happy fun time. Not grim dark sadness.

Pic related, not finished with graphics yet, but expect them to look like this, possibly with more minor details (yay for reusing graphics!).

Second is I am changing some of the fundamental features of the game, and making it more like DOTA (the game it is based on).
These changes include...

More balanced stats.

Character roles are more clearly defined (carries, gankers, initiators, pushers, support).

Each character has only 4 abilities now with lower maximum level caps (4 for normal skills, 3 for ult) and a 5th skill they all share in common that gives +2 to all stats (max of level 10). Maximum level is 25. (will comment on this a bit later)

Neutral enemies will be added and will spawn every so often.

And other very minor tweaks. (Buildings are immune to all spells/abilities for example)

Other features will include...

A map as seen in the screenshot. This map will show all friendly players (blue dots) and enemies they can see (red dots). Players are slightly different colors (light blue for allies, orange for enemies).
Unfortunately this is damn hard to translate into what you see in the actual game, it requires the use of tons of images, and I have to make my own system that imitates view()/range() with modifications.
But the map at least now allows players to be more co-ordniated. (There is a much bigger emphasis on team work this time around)

To make up for the fact that each character only has 4 skills, there is a larger variety of skills with more fun involved.
Some will work like simple targeted abilities, some cast at locations, some will use pixel projectiles and so on.

An example is the new and old technician. The old one was a bit pants. He had one useless summon. A weak damage ability, a weak heal, could set land mines, and summon a useful turret.

Now he can set land mines, but they are invisible, can be thrown and set from a distance. They deal damage and stun now.
He can smash people with a wrench, which stuns.
He can buff his own buildings with more attack/defence, or debuff enemy buildings with less attack/defence.
And he can summon his turret like before (which can be buffed with the above skill).

Before he didn't have much of a role but sit back and set traps.
Now he can do the same, being defensive, setting traps and turrets, buffing his tower.
But he can also help to push by weakening enemy buildings.
He can also gank by setting land mines then chasing enemies into them.
Most characters are being changed like this.

Most other changes are minor tweaks to improve gameplay, interface, and so on.
Most likely will be more maps and maybe more game modes as well.
Maybe also a map editor and stuff like medals (some things like how many kills you get are tracked already).

When will it be finished? No idea. Will probably host testing before it is finished however.
Lack of content aside, is your GSDC entry playable enough to submit?

Yes. It may have minor bugs, and is lacking a name, but it is entirely playable and a few people have played and tested it.

But as I say. It has a grand total of... Maybe 15 minutes of gameplay.
It is also lacking anything resembling detailed instructions or help files.

I never said I wouldn't finish it... Sometime in the future.
Honestly, I do not expect to be working on War of Heroes for longer than a month. I can (and have) recycled a lot of code, and have a good chunk of the graphics for the game finished.
In 3 days I have most of the basic stuff done, other than matchmaking. Once I add that, I can add units to play as and the game will be finished. (I plan to initially add 30, 4-6 a day is easily possible).

And, to be fair, I was kind of disappointed with how the GSD game turned out.
Not only did I run into a lot of technical limitations with BYOND (mostly with loading/unloading maps) which meant I had to tone things down a lot, but BYOND in general just didn't feel suited to the sort of game I wanted it to be. (I was hoping for faster paced, smoother gameplay, which could be done in single player, but not multiplayer)

I may finish it sometime within the next 2 months or so.
I was also considering releasing the source code to it (and several other abandoned projects). It's not particularly good, or pretty (what can you expect for 2 weeks of rushed work?), but it works and is designed to be very easy to add new stuff to.
I doubt anyone would use it, but if they wanted to, they could.
It took one look at the map before I realized "Oh BYOND is finally getting it's own DotA clone"
Aww. I liked the old graphics on WoH. They added the feeling of DotA :D.
