I seriously suggest reading the article :P. As generally the thrill of a competative game is attempting to win. Playing against someone who is trying to win is much more gratifying than playing someone who isn't. If you're making up your own rules of fair play you won't be much fun to someone who actually plays the game and you'll be one of the many people who simply whine at all the "cheap" people because you can't win against those "cheap" tactics.
While I agree with the nominal theme of that link, a significant portion of the article as written mostly seems to be a defense of laziness. Neither the guy doing the same thing over and over again nor the guy complaining about the first guy doing the same thing over and over again is likely to be doing all that much improving.
And why would you be so obsessed with getting better if the most fun you're having with the game is going to be with people of an equal skill level? Getting better is, thus, an obviously stupid thing to do at a certain point.

Then again, if a computer game is designed correctly, you won't find yourself too skilled to compete with someone else... for example, the randomness of module dealing in LRS!

Incidently, what has that article got against British people? =p
Anywho redirect comments on the debate of playing to win to my new blog entry. Reply here if you have Mario Kart DS friend codes and aren't one to hold back or complain when someone else doesn't.
