For those who use vim, or are interested in learning how to use it, I quickly made a syntax highlighting plugin. You can install it with Vundle (https://github.com/gmarik/vundle) or Pathogen (https://github.com/tpope/vim-pathogen).

You can find it on GitHub: https://github.com/wlue/vim-dm-syntax
Although there hasn't been any updates for months, that probably may still be the case, but in any case Ultimatum version 0.8.7 has been released tonight with include a slight modification to the interface, some internal bug fixes (which involved a serious bug that duplicated observers and caused errors when rejoining the game) and a new 6-player quick map.

Version 0.8.7 - March 3rd, 2010
- Situations with blank forms when trying to join or observe a game have been fixed
- Observers would be duplicated when rejoining a game
- Interface slightly modified to free up the unused command panel space
- New map: Whirl (6 player long moderate, mixed terrain) - a "cramped" map for a (relatively) quick 6-player matches

Known Issues (as of version 0.8.7)
- In certain situations that at this point haven't been able to be consistently reproduced, the recruit menu will not close
- In rare circumstances, units recruited may disappear and re-appear in other games
- In an unknown circumstance, players may end up getting a double turn. Please report ASAP if this problem occurs
- In certain unknown circumstances, the game may lock out and not allow the current player to do anything except end his or her turn. Please report ASAP as this occurs during gameplay.

This update contains some minor bug fixes that were caused from the 0.8.5 internal revamp. Not to worry, development is still continuing, albeit slowly, but hopefully this steady pace will get somewhere in the near future. :)

Version 0.8.6 - October 30th, 2009
- The Join Game interface would have issues when a host quits a game in the game lobby
- When the host logged out, players could not join or talk inside games
- New map: Icestorm (2 player fast moderate, snow terrain) - small moderate-paced map with mixed snow terrain surrounded by water

Known Issues (as of version 0.8.6)
- In certain situations that at this point haven't been able to be consistently reproduced, the recruit menu will not close. BYOND believes that the window doesn't exist, so it is safe to close the window by bringing focus to it and hitting ALT+F4
- In rare circumstances, units recruited may disappear and re-appear in other games
- In certain unknown circumstances, the game may lock out and not allow the current player to do anything except end his or her turn. Please report ASAP as this occurs during gameplay.

As usual, the Ultimatum server is up 24/7, and is located at byond://ultimatum.dynalias.com:6757 for everyone to enjoy.
The server has been updated to Ultimatum version 0.8.5, which serves as an intermediate version for upcoming exciting features. Although this is true, this update also brings a couple of bug fixes, graphical changes, and gameplay balances which should make some people happy.

A side-note, you must have BYOND 454 or later to be able to view the interface properly. Earlier version of BYOND won't be able to draw tile-background lables, so it will look a bit odd.

Version 0.8.5 - September 5th, 2009
- Many internal changes and overhauls to the client and game handling system in anticipation of new systems and features. New bugs may temporarily pop up in this intermediate version
- Changed the Dream Seeker window icon to the Ultimatum hub logo
- Minor power tweeks to the Elvish and Orcish faction (added new skills to the Enchantress, powered up Trolls and Occultists)
- Improved the interface panel graphics (made possible with the addition of tiled labels). You must upgrade BYOND to the version 454 and up.
- Minor graphical updates (recruit icon, unit rings, etc)
- Graphical fixes: Trenches were layering on top of castles, shroud wasn't always covering units (a layering issue)
- Client Preferences will now save properly (which broke in the previous version), savefiles now have hash validation
- Ultimatum now uses DMIFontsPlus (more of an internal change) with small text tweeks to the unit status box
- Bug fixes regarding the auto rejoin functionality have been resolved (game would produce a runtime error when players logged out before the game started)

So why the sudden burst of updates, you may ask? Well, in combination with all of the free time during the summer, I've regained some motivation to work on this old game (I believe the first Ultimatum public testing periods happened about three years old this month). However, I will be starting university in a couple days, so my free time will be drained out pretty quickly. But who knows, I'll still try to squeeze out updates.

In the meantime, you can join the dedicated server of Ultimatum at the same address as per usual:
Attentive players will notice the latest Ultimatum update includes a couple of key features that were recently implemented, such as the ability for players to quickly rejoin a game if they logged out (great for when you start to hear a thunderstorm outside). Here are the full details below.

Version 0.8.4 - August 24th, 2009
- Players are now able to log out of the game without immediatly forfeiting. Players must re-join the game within 3 minutes, and will automatically re-enter the game upon logging in.
- Removed the menu and status bar in the default interface to optimize screen area for smaller resolutions
- Decreased tick_lag to smooth out scrolling and movement
- Long-standing bug where units that leveled up at the beginning of a player's turn would not be able to move nor attack has been fixed
- While moving units, players can now automatically see the defense rating of terrain while dragging the mouse (previously players would have to hold shift)
- New map: Devastation (2 player moderate, mixed desert terrain) - moderate play map where two players fight between an oasis with mixed terrain

As a reminder, Ultimatum is now being hosted 24/7 on a dedicated SliceHost server, and everyone is welcome to join. It's located at the same URL mentioned last week.

byond://ultimatum.dynalias.com:6757

Also, for ACWraith:

Yes, a help file is coming. :)
So after four months of not being hosted, I've decided to bring Ultimatum back up. Hopefully interest in the game will grow again, unlike the times right before I took down the server. Such celebration is justified by a tiny update (a new map). If you haven't played Ultimatum, or haven't for a while, then now is your chance to try it out. :)

You can join by visiting the hub page and clicking the Join link (since I do not have a static IP address anymore), or by joining through your pager.

I plan on keeping this server up for the rest of the summer. If there is enough interest by September, I'll consider getting a dedicated server.
So sure, I haven't been active in the BYOND community recently, but it doesn't mean I've completely left it! I'm posting here today because I don't think it would be too great to let this membership and blog space go to a waste. I've been terribly busy for the past month or so. I'm in grade 12 now (or Senior, for you Americans), so I'm busy working on applications for American schools (MIT being one of them).

Ultimatum is still being hosted every weekend (when I am at home, at least), and some attentive members probably found out that I made a very small update for version 0.8.2. People are still playing, so if you haven't played for a while, then you probably haven't seen some of the newer features. If you've never played before, you are missing a fun experience (if you're the strategy fan, at least). As always, Ultimatum is being hosted during Saturday and Sunday from 6:00 PM.

In terms of BYOND programming development and community involvement, I've kind of dropped out of the grid (sorry Gug, and Dream Makers readers!). These past months have been busy, and I haven't found any proper time to get back into programming and writing articles for BYOND or even anything else.

Although I haven't been readily developing or writing new resources, there are still some excellent resources that I'm seeing being overlooked. I'm mainly referring to my resources in programming browser interfaces and related topics. If you're having trouble with Topic() or just want to be able to take advantage of a very powerful feature (especially when complemented with 4.0 interfaces) these resources below are for you! All of these are on Dream Makers:

Three-part Article Series on Browser Interfaces:
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3

upForm - a library to dynamically and centrally handle all browser interface functionality

upCommentBox - a utility/demo that utilizes upForm to create a custom user-submission form

upContainers - a library that defines and implements primitive data structures used in everyday programming

Albeit my disappearance, I haven't been doing nothing at all! During the end of the summer, I've put together and built a new high-end computer due to my old machine not being able to handle my tasks very well.

http://www.byond.com/members/UnknownPerson/files/ comp_final.jpg

I don't think the cell phone quality hinders the sheer awesomeness of this setup. If you're interested, here are the full specs:

CPU - Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83GHz Yorkfield
HSF - Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro
MOBO - ASUS P5Q Pro Socket 775 Intel P45 Motherboard
GPU #1 - Sapphire HD 4870 512MB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0
GPU #2 - ASUS 3650 EAH Silent 512MB GDDR2 PCI-Express 2.0
HDD - 2x Western Digital Caviar SE16 640GB SATA2 7200RPM Hard Drive
PSU - Corsair HX Series CMPSU-620HX 620W

Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 x64
Logitech G5 USB Mouse (old one)
Logitech G15 USB Keyboard (new one)
Creative Inspire P7800 7.1 Speakers

Samsung SyncMaster 245B 24" Widescreen (Center)
BenQ FP202W 20.1" Widescreen (right)
Sceptre 17" (left)

(no, I don't know if it runs Crysis, don't plan on playing that game anyway. Theoretically, it should run it fine at 1920x1200 at reasonable settings :P)

Other things I've done was take a service project to Peru, and go to Music Camp (!). More on these in a future blog post!

Although my retreat to real life (oh no) has been particularly demanding, I'll try to make a comeback to the BYOND community. Perhaps release another library, article, or game if we're lucky.

This is for an Independant Study Project, and it would be nice if I got a good amount of data about how much you sleep on average. Fill in your answer in the comments. Thanks!

First name: _____
Age: ____
Average amount of sleep on Weekday: ___
Average amount of sleep on Weekend: ___
Do you think you get enough sleep on a Weekday? ___
Do you think you get enough sleep on a Weekend? ___

For the "average amount of sleep" entries, you can round to the nearest .5 of an hour.

[Edit] Clarification: Please give exact values, and not ranges. If you can't find an exact value, just give an average estimate on a regular day. The amount of sleep is the average of one night, and not the cumulative weekday/weekend
