The series opens telling how a teenager called Ichigo Kurosaki is given Soul Reapers power by Rukia Kuchiki. As he assumes the duties of a Soul Reaper, Ichigo has to fight against giant creatures called hollows which are the souls of people who are not able to rest in peace after death. As he faces several challenges, some of his friends awaken their own powers due to being close to him and the fact that his spirit pressure is constantly leaking. However Soul Society, the place where souls go when they die, sends Soul Reapers arrests Rukia for giving her powers to Ichigo and prepare to execute her. Unwilling to let her die, Ichigo and his friends go to rescue her from Soul Society, causing them to infiltrate Soul Society's inner walls and face many Soul Reapers. This causes the unraveling of many mysteries and leads to the rebellion of Sôsuke Aizen, a former Soul Reaper captain, and the formation of his own army of hollows with which he will attack Soul Society.

Shinigami:
Soul Reapers are departed human souls that have gained supernatural powers. Soul Reapers can only be seen by other spiritually aware entities, which excludes most humans. Additionally, they can be injured and die like regular humans, though it takes considerably greater injuries for the latter to occur than it would in regular humans. All Soul Reapers possess a zanpakuto, a sword that has a spirit created by their powers. By learning the name of the sword's spirit, Soul Reapers can unlock more powerful forms of their zanpakuto. The first form, known as shikai changes the sword's appearance to better facilitate its special abilities. The second form, known as bankai can only normally be achieved when a Soul Reaper trains with their zanpakuto for decades. Once achieved, the Soul Reaper can unlock their zanpakuto's full potential, increasing their own power several times over. Many Soul Reapers are able to use kido;, a form of magic that can be performed by reciting a specific incantation. Most of the kido; spells seen in the series have been used as attacks, defensive measures, or to bind others, though they can also serve more specialized needs such as healing wounds or communication over long distances. Spells are ranked on a scale of 1 to 99, indicating their complexity and overall power.Soul Reaper operations are based out of Soul Society, which is an afterlife in Bleach. Travel between the human world and Soul Society is extremely limited and monitored, but some Soul Reapers are stationed in the human world to carry out their duties. In addition, it is a crime for a Soul Reaper to remain in the human world longer than directed. A Soul Reaper's duties include leading 'Wholes' (ghosts) to Soul Society in a practice called soul burial, and the cleansing of hollows.

Arrancar:
Arrancar are hollows that have had their masks almost completely removed and have gained the powers of a Soul Reaper. In the process, they gain a more humanoid appearance as well as strength, speed and intelligence beyond the level of a simple hollow. They also gain hierro, skin so hard they can fight against opponents with swords bare-handed. Arrancar become major antagonists during the second part of the series as they start being led by Sousuke Aizen who uses the Hougyoku to create and perfect the arrancar. Like Soul Reapers, arrancar possess zanpakuto. Unlike Soul Reapers, whose zanpakuto are manifestations of their owner's soul, arrancar's zanpakuto are manifestations of their former hollow selves. With occasional exceptions, an arrancar's zanpakuto resembles a regular sword in its sealed state. When released through a process called resurrección part of their original hollow form is restored, changing their appearance, giving them greater strength, and granting them access to their original abilities.

Espada:
The Espada are the ten strongest arrancar in Sousuke Aizen's army. They are ranked in order of their strength and have their respective number tattooed somewhere on their body as proof of their superiority. The Espada are also allowed to choose any ordinary arrancar and have them appointed as their direct subordinates, referred to as fracción. The members are listed according to their rank.

Quincy:
Unlike the Shinigami, who use a sword as their primary weapon, the Quincy's weapon of choice is a bow. It is constructed from spiritual particles drawn from their surroundings, also unlike the Shinigami, who rely on their own innate spiritual energy (as a reflection of this, Quincies have white spirit threads like normal humans, while Shinigami have red spirit threads.) Flashbacks in the anime show earlier Quincy using longbows or crossbows and firing spiritual arrows from them. Quincy bows are summoned using an artifact called a Quincy Cross. The only limit to a Quincy's ability to create and fire arrows is their own stamina and ability to absorb ambient spirit particles. Quincies also have various tools and battle aides that can increase their power or serve as secondary weapons. Another contrast between the Shinigami and the Quincy are their methods. While Shinigami purify Hollows, thus preserving the balance of souls between the two worlds, the Quincy destroy hollows, former soul and all. In doing so, the balance between the worlds is slowly tipped towards one side, endangering both worlds.

Bounto:
Bount, being created as variations on a shinigami soul, have similar powers to shinigami. The foremost of these powers is the Bount doll, a familiar equivalent to the shinigami zanpakuto. Like a zanpakuto, a doll is its creator's power given physical form. Also like a zanpakuto, a doll's personality is much like its creator's, though the dolls seem to have more personality variation than the zanpakuto spirits seen thus far. The main difference between a doll and a zanpakuto is how they operate. Unlike a zanpakuto, whose personality is generally dormant except when the shinigami wishes to speak to them, a doll's personality is always dominant. Dolls are self-sufficient when released, though they can easily be resealed. The Bount's ability to control their doll is largely based on their individual power and relationship with the doll. Moreover, if either the doll or its Bount partner sustains severe damage in a battle, the Bount may lose control over his doll, depending on the amount of damage dealt. If a doll is injured, it will simply return itself to its sealed state. However, should its master be injured, the doll may go berserk and kill its master. Bounts with a genuine bond with their dolls can transgress this (but only if their interaction goes well beyond that of between master and slave), however, as shown by Yoshino's doll's loyalty towards his master to the point where he refused to leave her side to fulfill her final wish: for her to be merged with him. Like a zanpakuto, dolls are generally sealed into an object and released as necessary (Go Koga's doll, for example, is sealed into a metal sphere). The object varies greatly from person to person and is often an expression of the doll's abilities. In order to call upon a Bount's doll, the phrase "Zeige Dich" is said, which is a German phrase meaning "Show yourself." To summon a doll, a Bount needs to undergo a ritual where they chant an incantation. These instructions were first given to young Kariya by Ran'Tao after the shinigami attack. The ritual includes sulfur, phosphorus, carbon, water, fat, magnesium and lime (the ingredients of the human body). When a doll is summoned, it is small in size and power, but grows as the Bount's power grows.

Vaizard:
The Vizards are the antithesis to the Arrancar, Shinigami who have obtained Hollow powers.Having begun as Shinigami, the vizards appear entirely human, and barring those times where they are using their powers are indistinguishable from ordinary Shinigami. To gain access to their Hollow powers, a Vaizard dons a Hollow mask. This allows them to augment their shinigami abilities with hollow powers, as well as giving them access to some of the generic hollow abilities. Their spiritual pressure likewise changes into a mix of Hollow and shinigami. This process of donning one's hollow mask is referred to as "hollowification".

Sado:
Yasutora Sado is a teenager who studies in the same class as Ichigo Kurosaki. Because Ichigo first read Yasutora's name off a nametag, he pronounced his family name as Chad due to the kanji, and Ichigo continues to call him this throughout the story.

Inoue:
Orihime Inoue is the classmate and friend of Ichigo Kurosaki. Like many other friends of Ichigo, she quickly develops spiritual powers of her own after Ichigo becomes a Shinigami. Later, she is abducted and forced to leave to Hueco Mundo by the Arrancar, the enemies of Soul Society, as their leader has set his eyes on her unusual and potent powers. Ichigo and her other friends set out to rescue her, despite going against Soul Society's orders by doing so.
