I've decided to get in to doing some heavy art. Mostly castle-themed. Once I've attempted at some of the art, you'll see more of me here asking for opinions and advice.

- Which application is best for pixel art like base movement icons and still images?

- What size format (in the application) should I use for a 80x80 icon (in a game)? I ask this for a specific reason: I'm not sure if images should be downscaled to make them appear more high quality easier.
Are you familiar with any art programs? There's no "best" program, especially when it comes to pixel art. Use what you're comfortable with. All of them have a learning curve.

Down-scaling images never makes them look of higher quality, especially with pixel art. The best file extension to save with is .png or .gif, depending on the program you use. And if you mean what I think you mean by size format, it doesn't matter. Use as large of a canvas as you want.

As a side note, why are you using a tile size of 80x80? It's totally impractical.

If you can't identify the pixels, there's no point in doing pixel art.

I mean, you're free to do what you want but that's the general view on tiles with large dimensions. You rarely find tiles larger than 64x64, as it's impractical to make variations that looks good and complement each other.

And if you're familiar with Paint.NET, you might as well use it.
Paint.NET is more than good enough.
